Introducing: Salifert Potassium Reef Test
As we expand our line of Salifert test kits we are excited to bring this one in. There’s no overstating the importance of secondary and trace elements in a reef tank especially when you strive to get the best color and growth out of your favorite corals!
Potassium is one of the key elements for successful reef aquaristics. Since it must be available in a suitable proportion at all times, it is also one of these important elements.
Potassium is a macro element with importance for skeletal growth and cell function as well as nutrient conversion, but at the same time also a “fertilizer” for zooxanthellae. It is therefore important to keep the potassium value as stable as possible.
Potassium is contained in seawater in a comparable quantity to calcium, and it is no less important. The correct concentration in relation to the other macro elements is important for the successful aquarium care of corals. If you maintain a reef tank with mixed coral inhabitants and you use a high-quality brand salt mix to perform regular partial water changes of 10 percent per week, a potassium deficiency will very likely never present as a problem.
Potassium in ratio to calcium:
Potassium is a macro element that should always be set slightly below the calcium value (Ca value minus 20 mg/l). The optimum value is between 380 and 420 mg/l. Potassium is a nutrient and part of the supply process for corals and biofilms. Biofilms have many different purposes and are valuable to many types of corals, but specifically to Acropora spp., which we and fellow stick heads refer to as sliming.
Potassium indicator species (Canary in the coal mine): (what coral you can use visually to help determine if levels may be off)
The best indicator corals for potassium concentration are Acropora valida and the red Montipora with foliate growth. Acropora valida shows bright tissue and bright violet growth tips only if the potassium value is correct. The red Montipora quickly becomes pale with potassium deficiency and stops growing, recognizable by the lack of white growth margins.
***We never recommend only using an indicator species as means to dose or reduce dosing any system even by experts; rather this method is to be used as named as an indicator that testing and an alteration may be necessary. Never dose or alter a dosing or maintenance regimen without testing for the element in question!***
When in doubt or without means to test, if an indicator species is telling you something is off it is always a good idea to perform small partial water changes and allow several days for the coral to react to any adjustment. Growth, polyp extension, or coloration recovery will not be instant and never change multiple parameters at once as this can cause more harm than good!!
Test regularly, take your time, and enjoy!!!

Featured Product: Fritz Zyme 9
Zyme 9 contains live saltwater-specific strains of live nitrifying bacteria proven to reduce fish loss due to toxic levels of ammonia and nitrite. Nitrifying bacteria can take weeks to naturally establish colonies in new aquariums while ammonia and nitrite can reach lethal levels in only a few days. Fritz Zyme 9 provides the proper balance of bacteria proven to rapidly seed biofilters, greatly reducing the natural cycle time allowing for safe, faster addition of livestock.
We truly believe in this product and use it in store, in service clients systems, and at home. There is no overstating the importance of the biological filtration in all aquaria and should be maintained regularly, not forgotten about once the system has cycled. We recommend regular dosing of this product no matter the age or maturity of the system and especially within the first year and or after any agressive water changes, deep cleaning, filter media changes, adding new livestock, or chemical treatments which may damage your bacteria colonies.
We carry 16 oz, 32 oz, and the gallon sizes, making it cost effective for any size system. Stop in and grab a bottle and we assure you, your aquatic loved ones will thank you!
Nitrifying and heterotrophic bacteria back in stock at PCA!!! supplies us as a store and the industry alike with the highest quality of full marine bacterias in a blend like no other! Don’t settle for anything but the best and we have sizes for all including up to a gallon of Zyme 9!!!
