Rules for the paint out at the Roosevelt Zoo in Minot on Sunday, August 16. Please be mindful to be a good guest.

Artists are allowed to paint on museum grounds only during our regular hours.

All of our visitors are extremely important to us and we therefore ask you to not block the views of any of our exhibits. We appreciate your patience and courteous behavior.

Some of our guests are using wheelchairs, strollers and walkers while our staff frequently needs to use electric carts to do their job so we ask that you allow room for people to get around you and your gear.

Please respect all safety cones, chains, cables, gates and "staff only" signs: keep your easel and your gear away from these areas.

For the safety of our animals and visitors: take away everything you brought with you, paints, paper towels, used paint tubes, etc. While you paint, please avoid drips or spills. Water miscible oils, colored pencils or watercolors are a good choice for our environment. Use caution with all artist materials. No glass containers.

The staff asks that you not interact with the animals in any way; do not feed them, coax them into moving or attempt to influence their behavior. Respect all barriers, fences, and moats. Never cross into restricted areas to get a better angle. Do not use reflective surfaces, mirrors, or bright artificial lights that might agitate the animals or disrupt their routines.

Since zoo animals rarely stay still long enough for a traditional landscape study, focus on gesture sketching. Use a sketchbook to capture quick forms and movements, then add color and background details later. You can also take reference photos with a camera to finish the piece when you get back to your studio.

A few of our exhibit animals become highly stressed by anything out the ordinary and may become upset by artist activity. Please choose another location if a keeper should ask you to do so.

The weather has been a bit hot and the air smoky so we haven’t had a paint out lately. However, August’s paint out is EXCITING! The paint out will be at the Roosevelt Zoo in Minot, on Sunday, August 16th. I will post the paint out rules later, but to keep the animals safe, no oil paints. We will pay their regular fee to get in as this helps support the zoo. We will need to be aware that other zoo guests will be wanting to see the animals too. Invite your other artist friends, this one will be fun!!

You have to think about your artwork as telling a story. What story do you want to tell? Is it about the sky? Or is it about the land? A 50/50 story is not as captivating.
