This was my first ever attempt at oil paint. Our professor asked us to look at ourselves as onions. What layers do you have? Do you show the same layer to everyone? The layer you show your children vs. your friends? Your church layer vs the layer you show your husband? This a thought provoking journey that brought tons of growth.

I painted my eyes with my irises filled with words. The cool colored side represents my private or fearful side…what I often hide from the public or hide from sometimes even myself. The warm side represent my hot emotions that sometimes are impossible to hide because they ooze out like lava. They can be shown to the public but aren’t always understood. I’m glad I have this painting, as my eyes have aged & my layers have changed, some for the better & some for the worse. And on a funny note, my students always have me “watching” them even when there is a substitute!!😂

One of my favorite oil paintings. I painted this when I felt like my mind was stuck in a constant loop of thinking about the past or future, causing me to constantly miss out on the now. A book by Eckhart Tolle called A New Earth (also the title of this painting) literally changed my life. I now live in the NOW!!✌️☮️
