On October 10, 1940, during the height of the Blitz, a N**i bomb pierced the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral, leaving its high altar in ruins. Yet, despite the destruction surrounding it, Sir Christopher Wren’s masterpiece stood defiant against the darkness.

Built on a site that has housed places of worship since ancient times, the current baroque cathedral, completed in 1710, has survived centuries of turmoil, fires, and wars. During World War II, as London endured heavy air raids, brave civilian defense teams like the St. Paul’s Fire Watch risked everything to save the structure, even removing unexploded bombs from its roof.

The iconic image of St. Paul’s dome standing tall through smoke and fire became a powerful symbol of British resilience and hope. It survived the war largely intact, eventually ringing its bells to celebrate the liberation of Europe.

On October 2, 1780, British intelligence officer Major John André was executed as a spy in Tappan, New York, unraveling one of the most famous treason plots in American history.

Major André had been captured by American militiamen with secret papers hidden in his boot detailing a scheme by Continental Brigadier General Benedict Arnold to surrender the strategic fort at West Point for £20,000.

While André faced a military board and was sentenced to death, Arnold escaped aboard the British warship Vulture. Before fleeing, Arnold wrote to General George Washington pleading for the safety of his wife, Peggy Shippen Arnold, claiming she was innocent, unaware that she had secretly helped facilitate the correspondence.

Washington protected Mrs. Arnold and arranged her return home, while Benedict Arnold spent the rest of the war fighting for the British, cementing his name forever as a synonym for traitor.
