In September, 2020, I went through a rapid-fire cancer experience in the midst of COVID (of course!). Eight days after emergency hospitalization, I went home with a diagnosis of Stage 2 non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, 1 round of emergency chemo under my belt, a good prognosis, and enough topical humor to fill a coloring book about cancer, or two.
Humor was the best way for me stay in the moment and derail dark thoughts during the intense early days, because my thoughts took me everywhere. My oncologist and oncology nurse agreed, and suggested maybe I should write these humorous comments down; no one was talking about cancer this way. Fast-forward several months and I found myself calling upon friends and former advertising colleagues to donate their time and help illustrate the comments; what a fabulous response. I'd learned how helpful coloring could be in providing distraction, focus and relaxation and some of the comments were really illustrative. The end results came together as coloring books - postcards from personal experience during cancer and chemo. And while they do not make fun of cancer, they do make fun of what I went through, and cancer patients have found them relatable.
The coloring books “Greetings from Chemo Country” and “Welcome to Six Chemos” are shared with oncology patients at Northwestern University Health System. And now I'm proud to announce that the coloring books are available through TownHouse Books and Café, 105 N. 2nd Avenue, St. Charles, IL 60174. They're $10/each and a portion of the proceeds from the books will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
