West Virginia has a cryptid for just about every county. North-central WV has one that doesn't get talked about nearly enough.

The Vegetable Man — sometimes called Veggie Man — is a piece of West Virginia cryptid and alien folklore associated with a claimed 1968 encounter and the name Jennings Frederick, somewhere in the Marion County area.

The story has roots in WV folklore and later retellings, some of which are themselves contested. This is one of those cases where the legend may have grown in the telling.

Which is, honestly, half the fun of it.

On the night of August 21, 1955, something came to a farmhouse in Kelly, Christian County, Kentucky.

At least, that's what the families there said.

What they reported was a close encounter with small beings — strange, unsettling, and not easily explained. The event became one of the most discussed claimed encounters of its kind in American history.

Skeptics have offered explanations. Believers have their own. The families who reported it stuck to their story.

What happened at that farmhouse in Kelly, Kentucky on the night of August 21, 1955 has never been fully resolved.
