This is me on a rainy Sunday. Cozy socks, a good book, and my supervisor keeping a close eye on things.

It's raining ALL DAY here in central Maryland. You might have big plans involving the sofa and Netflix (same here!). But imagine how great you'll feel if you also got a few little things done around the house.

I'm a big fan of small actions that give BIG rewards. That little thrill every time you open a drawer, cabinet, or closet and everything you need, use, and love is right there where you need it.

You don't have to be a Type A perfectionist to get there. Small steps, done regularly, are all it takes.

Here are 5 easy things you can do today without ruining the chill day vibe.

1. Kitchen junk drawer
Gather the random hardware and bits you're afraid to toss. Bag them, label it "Misc. from Kitchen, Oct. 2026," and put it in a box in the basement or garage marked "Misc. House Things." Done.

2. Your closet
Move your cozy fall shoes, bags, and clothes front and center. Slide the summery things to the back. No big reorganizing. Just make what you'll wear now (and what fits now) easy to grab.

3. Pet toys and gear
Toss the old, gross stuff your pets don't use or have outgrown. Need to replace something? Put a shopping date on your calendar, even if it's online.

4. Papers
Bring a stack to the sofa and scan with your phone while your show plays. Then recycle or shred. (Or pay a kid to shred!)

5. Cookbooks
Pick one you love but never use and flag recipes with sticky notes. I have been doing this for 30 years. A note on the TOP of the page means "make this real soon." A note on the SIDE means "someday." These days I scan my someday recipes into Apple Notes.

Which one are you trying today? Tell me in the comments!

Do you have a shredder, but also piles of papers that you aren’t shredding?

If you live in Montgomery County, Maryland, there’s a great solution just for you!

Fall is my favorite time of year, and I love refreshing my outdoor planters, decorating the fireplace mantles, and putting a little bit of the season in decor around the house.

But every year, I do less. I donate or give away whatever I didn’t use the previous year, and I just spend less time and money on the whole project. My goal is to get it all down to one bin per holiday, which seemed impossible a few years ago but now it’s a goal I feel really good about.

I just don’t want to be stuck in habits that have started to feel like obligatory tasks.

To be honest, I only want to spend time on things that bring me joy. That’s the truth of it.

Isn’t it crazy that our society labels that kind of thought as “selfish?” As if Life is supposed to be stressful with tons of To Do items packed into every day?

Not only do I reject that kind of thinking, but now that I’m 58 years old, I actually rebel against it!

Right now I’m sitting on my totally undecorated deck, playing with the dogs on a beautiful Fall morning, and it’s glorious!

What do you think?

Did you decorate for Fall yet?

River is 6 months old today, and we’ve had her for two months.

And one thing about River: she is ALWAYS in the way.

Not because she’s being bad. She just wants to be with us every second.

If I’m cooking, she’s at my feet.
If I’m cleaning, she’s right there.
If I’m walking through a doorway, somehow River is also trying to walk through that exact doorway.

It’s adorable. It’s also incredibly hard to get anything done.
And it made me think about clutter.
Because really, clutter is just stuff that’s in the way.

- It’s the pile you have to move before you can clean the counter.
- The boxes blocking the closet.
- The clothes hanging on the treadmill so you can’t use it.
- The guest room that isn’t really a guest room because it’s where everything gets tossed when company is coming.
- The garage you can’t park in.
- The dining table you can’t eat at.
- The chair that stopped being a chair months ago because now it’s a holding zone.

So I’ve decided I don’t even want to think of decluttering as “decluttering” anymore.

I’m calling it:

GET IT OUT OF THE WAY.

Because that feels different.
You're not just getting rid of stuff.
You're freeing up space in your home.
You're creating room for the things you actually love and use.
You're uncovering storage you forgot you had.
You're making it easier to clean, easier to move around, easier to find things, easier to live.

That feels powerful.
That feels like progress.

That feels like:

WOOHOO. I’M DOING IT.

And that’s actually the first thing I tell people who feel completely stuck with their stuff:

Start by getting things OUT OF THE WAY.

Don’t organize yet. Don’t buy bins. Don’t create some elaborate donation plan.

Just start making space.

I put this information together with a few other pieces of advice about decluttering, so if you feel stuck and don't know where to start, email me at [email protected] with the word HELP and I’ll send them to you. (or DM me with your email address).

River, however, is still allowed to be in the way.

I met a new client the other day who told me,

“You just lifted 100 pounds off my shoulders. You don’t know what that means to me.”

I did not help her declutter or organize anything.

We just talked.

She was downsizing and moving after 38 years in this house.

- Her Realtor wanted the house on the market right now.

- Her husband wanted to take more things than would fit in the new place.

- Her grown kids did not want to come get their stuff out of their old rooms.

- She wanted to carefully donate items to the right people and charities.

And she’s in her 80s, in poor health, doing all of this alone and everyone was upset.

So we talked, just her and I.

We looked at the situation from everyone’s point of view and she could see why they were struggling. I assured her that Yes, what she was trying to do was hard and she was doing an incredible job. She really needed to hear that.

We made a 30 day plan to get the house on the market, getting some helpful friends and neighbors involved to save money and share the workload.

I talked to her husband and the realtor. I listened, I understood. I assured them they were in a tough situation and doing a great job. They were relieved, they felt heard, they calmed down. They agreed to the Plan.

This is my calling. My Life’s work. This is what 30 years in this industry has brought me to. I feel so blessed to do this “work”.

To help stressed out people find peace of mind is the very best part of what I do. I’m so lucky.

So I thought I would try out TikTok for my business’ social media, and I recently made three posts of just me talking to the camera, very similar to the last three posts I made on Facebook. And today, TikTok told me I was permanently banned for going against community standards?

So weird. Those three posts have been my only foray into Tiktok ever, I never even use it. I have no explanation. And neither do the TikTok people either because they did not explain their decision at all.

I guess that’s the Universe helping me keep things simple!

Happy October 1st!

The first day of a new month is so powerful. You get a whole reset. A chance to start over, do things a little differently, and make your life feel better one tiny habit at a time.

Here’s one small mindset shift that can change a lot:

Start saying to yourself,

“Look at me! I’m someone who puts things away.”

It sounds silly, but we start to act like the person we believe we are.

Pick one or two of these and start doing them consistently, every single day.

1. I put everything away in the bathroom when I’m finished getting ready.
2. I put my shoes away when I take them off.
3. I hang up my coat.
4. I sort the mail when I bring it into the house.
5. I take something with me when I leave a room.
6. I put dishes straight into the dishwasher instead of leaving them in the sink.
7. I put groceries away completely before I move on to something else.
8. I put dirty clothes in the hamper.
9. I reset the kitchen before I go to bed.
10. I spend five minutes putting things back where they belong before I settle in for the evening.

Notice yourself doing the right thing and say, “Look at me. I’m someone who takes care of my space.”

This is how we upgrade ourselves into being a better person who is choosing an easier, softer Life, one little change at a time.

This is powerful.

3 words.

“Can’t change it.”

This is some tough love for all the seniors out there with a lot of stuff.

Don’t leave it for your kids to deal with.
