๐ผ๐ฟ IT'S GOLDENROD HARVEST TIME! ๐ฟ๐ผ
Upstate South Carolina herbalistsโฆ go take a look around! ๐
Those beautiful golden-yellow blooms popping up along fields, roadsides, fence lines, and sunny edges of the woods are putting on their fall show โ and it's time to start paying attention to your goldenrod. ๐ผ
Goldenrod (Solidago) is one of those plants I absolutely love seeing this time of year.
It's abundant.
It's beautiful.
It's a favorite of pollinators. ๐๐ฆ
And it has a long history of traditional herbal use.
๐ฟ If you're planning to harvest goldenrod, now is the time to start watching those blooms.
Look for plants that are:
โจ Healthy and vibrant
โจ Correctly identified
โจ In full bloom or just coming into bloom
โจ Growing in a clean area away from roadsides, sprayed areas, and other potential contaminants
And here's your little herbalist reminder:
Don't harvest just because it looks like goldenrod. ๐ฟ
There are many different Solidago species in our region, so proper identification is important before harvesting or using any wild plant.
And please remember our pollinators! ๐
Goldenrod is an important late-season nectar source, so you don't have to take everything you find. Leave plenty behind for the bees, butterflies, and other wildlife that depend on these late-season blooms.
๐ผ Have you spotted goldenrod blooming yet here in the Upstate?
Drop a ๐ผ in the comments if you've already found some!
