Today's Artist Portfolio Spotlight of the Week is: Elise Willa Pincu Delfield

"My grandfather used to tell me not to go looking for love, it will come to me. Pottery making came to me at the University of Florida – and it was love at first touch. I had not taken art classes or considered myself capable of creating anything beautiful or useful before that first day at the wheel. Once that lump of clay took shape (and a horrible, lumpy shape it was) as a vessel to contain, I was hooked. I was in love and wanted nothing more than to spend my life working on making a better pot. 23 years later I am pretty proud of my work and still striving to make better pots.”

"Familiarity evokes memory and I look to this association to present nostalgia through form. My reference to rural American architecture and antique rural implements places the viewer in a familiar setting which is layered with time, function and history while color creates celebration in these iconic objects. The vessel forms tie these objects back to the domestic space, enriching ones living environment while allowing for quiet contemplation and a reminder of a simpler time.”

The Tangible and Intangible Tools for Making Art

See more details at https://instagr.am/p/CXEQnB3r-_B/ - The Lucky Dip shop update will be live in a little over an hour. There's a bunch of standard pieces of pretty much every design (Swirly, Impulse, Peacock Eye, Pebble, Nautilus, Drippy Slip), but there are also a handful of test pieces.

This particular piece is an idea I had for a Valentine's Day Special (I'm not sure yet if this will be the final design) and there's just one mug in this style available.

It is possible to request a certain style of piece, but the selection is limited and allocated on a first come first served basis, so please don't order if you wouldn't be happy with a different piece. The standard shop will open as usual in January and all the normal pieces will be available to order directly then.

Delighting the Eye

“A pot’s inherent potency to enhance daily life—a simultaneous engagement of concept (utility), action, service, and aesthetic experience—is deeply compelling and challenging. Pots that nest in other pots, like my salt and pepper set, also appeal to my sensibility of thinking through and making pots that connect multiple forms and surfaces into one; like the walls of a home, that contain and embrace the internal multiple spaces.” Katrina Chaytor, Nov/Dec 2017 issue of .

I gravitated toward handbuilding techniques during undergraduate school, discovering that they were the best choices for the forms I wanted to make. Inspiration for my pots comes from a variety of sources, from a European architectural frieze to a slip-cast Wedgwood teapot.

Clay Culture: Neutral Hands and Wrists

"We can all learn to use our body in a more neutral position to keep ourselves healthy as well as to reduce or eliminate discomfort. Using awkward, non-neutral positions can fatigue our arms, hands, limbs, and joints. Maintaining a neutral posture is important; if you respect the way your body is designed to move while performing studio tasks, then you can minimize aches and pains." I have always had a passion for ceramics, but I had to stop throwing pots because my hands were in pain right after using the wheel. Now I can only handbuild. A Well Wrapped Surface

"Glazing is only one of the many ways to create new surfaces on ceramic forms. Many times as potters, I believe we simply put too much emphasis on finding and formulating new glazes or altering current glazes to enhance our work. I know this was a common trap for me as I’ve worked through the years. I’ve combatted this problem by using techniques I’ve learned from other art mediums and applying them to my ceramic pieces. One of my favorite methods is what I refer to as slip transferring." David Self, from the Mar/Apr 2015 issue of Pottery Making Illustrated magazine.

Digital By Design

"Digital technology seems to fit into design perfectly because setting up files, exporting to machinery, and having a hands-off approach to fabrication seem removed from intuitive and on-the-spot decision making. In the translation from machine to object there is an area that needs to be explored further because it allows for alteration to the finished piece. The following artists illustrate this idea as well as expand on their experiences in blending the nexus of art, craft, and design." Adam Chau, from the January 2018 issue of Ceramics Monthly.

"My creative process evolved from a deeply ingrained need to know things. My lust for learning comes in waves; when subjects grab my attention, I read up incessantly, make aesthetic associations to the information absorbed. Snagged bits of visual information are used in conjunction with geometric abstraction to create natural forms. Which, in turn, are arranged in environmental tropes. Whether arranged or independent my work explores areas of biology, astrology, cartography, quantum mechanics, sacred geometry, the human condition, and their affiliated implications."

Pentalobe Plate and Mollusk Set

"I’m drawn to making pots because of their role as intimate domestic objects. They’re part of the stage set of everyday meals and special occasions, framing the food and drink that we consume. In doing so, pottery helps to shape the way we think and feel, ultimately affecting who we become." Sean Scott from the Jan/Feb 2019 issue of Pottery Making Illustrated magazine.

The inspiration for the pentalobe plate and mollusk set came primarily from my direct experiences with the natural environment. "In his essay, “The Symmetrical Universe,” American physicist Alan Lightman explores why human beings are drawn to symmetry. According to Lightman, “symmetry represents order, and we crave order in this strange universe.” Examples of symmetry in nature are all around us. Consider the mirror image of a butterfly’s wings or the precise uniformity found in each point on a snowflake. Lightman considers why bees build hives comprised of hexagons rather than more organic shapes, noting that economy is the driv-ing force behind the shape. Hexagons lie flat against each other leaving no gaps, allowing the bees to work in a more orderly and efficient manner. It’s this same sense of economy that drives Andy Bissonnette as he creates the intricately ordered patterns on his blackware raku ceramic vessels." Susan McHenry, from the March 2021 issue of Ceramics Monthly.
