Last semester, I had a chance to explore Historical Millinery in “Costume Crafts.”

During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, elaborate fabric bonnets and silk top hats were constructed by stitching textiles over rigid foundations—such as buckram—or pre-formed wire millinery frames.

Here is my take on a Late 19th Century Ladies hat.

It’s Official! I’m headed back to the Otterbein Summer Theatre costume department as wardrobe lead for She Loves Me, Lost In Yonkers, and My Way.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

Have been meaning to share this one for a while. It’s one of my favorite projects from my spring semester costume design class.

PROMPT: Romeo & Juliet Reimagined!

My Romeo and Juliet was told through the lens of the Chinese Ming Dynasty and explored the dynamics of status, age, and political unrest.

As a driving design concept I was inspired by The Butterfly Lovers, a classic folk tale often referred to as the “Chinese Romeo and Juliet.”

I really enjoyed this project as I got to hone my rendering style and do some rabbit hole research on Chinese symbolism and traditions.

When I first started sewing | began collecting vintage patterns as they not only provided inspiration for practice projects, but also served as informal costume/fashion history lessons.

Image 5 shows the joy I felt after receiving a box of abandoned patterns from a neighbor's estate sale in 2022.

As you can imagine, I was thrilled when I was asked to pick out a pattern envelope from the Otterbein University collection for my final costume technology Il project last spring.

We were to demonstrate our draping and pattern-making skills by replicating a garment using only the reference image from a selected vintage pattern envelope.

My selection, "Simplicity 5499" A Vintage 70's Mod Mini Dress

The project proved to be a great way to practice proportions, fabric selection, and other practical considerations we often navigate as costume technicians. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to problem-solve in the moment and love how my mini dress it turned out.

One of the things I always enjoy about costume design is getting to revisit well-known characters/shows and putting my own spin on things.

Sometimes the re-imagining is out of necessity (budget or casting) other times it’s just to add a spotlight to something new. In 2026 I’ll be working on one of the most beloved fairytales of all time.

But, in honor of the release of this famous sponge’s new movie, I’m taking a look back at my work on The SpongeBob Musical.
