Salonnière DSM

Salonnière DSM Collection of art salon history, style, culture, events, people and places curated by a Salonniere in Des Moines, Iowa.

A Salonnière is a woman who hosts a salon—an intimate gathering for intellectual, artistic, and cultural exchange. Originating in 17th- and 18th-century France and associated with the Enlightenment, salons were led by women who shaped artistic, social, and political discourse. The tradition later spread to the United States, where American Salonnière’s continued this legacy by fostering creative d

ialogue and supporting artists and thinkers. Modern-day Salonnière’s include figures such as Tina Brown, Diane von Furstenberg, Arianna Huffington, and Marina Abramović. Today, in addition to in-person gatherings, global platforms such as TED Talks—and even digital spaces—extend the spirit of the salon by promoting idea-sharing and cultural conversation. Although the classic salon has evolved, its impact remains significant. Through Salonnière DSM, I aim to carry this tradition forward in Des Moines, Iowa. My mission is to elevate the status of creatives in our city and state and to provide a center for networking, public engagement, new ideas, personal development, and artistic growth. Inspired by historical salons, events may include curated dinners, talks, exhibitions, performances, and other social experiences designed to connect artists, thinkers, and community leaders in meaningful exchange.

SALON STYLE

The art of the salon hang. The gallery wall’s cooler cousin! Think groupings over grids, hung floor to ceiling, densely packed, character over symmetry…

Born in 17th century Paris and still going strong, the salon hang draws on storytelling and personality over minimalism. The best ones feel instinctive, collected, curated but not too tidy.

Swipe through for some brilliant examples by .spiteri

The example by works so well with objects and artworks blending seamlessly. It works because it’s bold and having fun, leaning pieces on the floor, mixing sculpture and print, and using every inch of wall space to get across a personality. It feels lived in.

The example by .spiteri is brighter, more graphic, a colourful mix of modern pieces hung edge to edge, with varied scales and tones that draws you in. It shows that a salon hang can be more structured too.

Often asked what the difference is between a gallery wall and a salon hang so here’s part one of a new mini series to show you.

Save for future inspo, or tag a fellow maximalist.

SALONNIÈRE

Madame Roland was the brilliant mind behind the French Revolution’s Girondins.

A salonnière who shaped politics with words, ideas, and influence, she believed deeply in liberty and reason.

When the Revolution turned on itself, she was imprisoned and sent to the guillotine.

“Liberty, what crimes are committed in thy name.”

Salon de Fleurus

In the Paris of the 1600s, behind the ornate doors of aristocratic mansions, a quiet revolution was brewing in sitting rooms and salons. Tired of the gossip and gaucheness of royal court life, women of culture were hosting intimate social gatherings. Relaxed yet intellectual, these evenings were driven by discussion, debate and witty discourse on the latest philosophical tracts, scientific curiosities or political ideas of the day. They were to become a melting pot of enlightening ideas and a launch pad for creative thinkers.

The Salon de Fleurus is a traveling educational installation and contemporary reconstruction of Gertrude Stein’s famous 1904–1934 Parisian salon at 27 rue de Fleurus. It acts as an artistic, often anonymous, "memory" space filled with reproductions of modern art—specifically Picasso, Cezanne, and Matisse—to explore the origins of modern art narratives. Key iterations included a long-running SoHo, New York location and a Metabolic Studio project in California.

The room, the largest of the four that her apartment consisted of, is adorned with an incredibly rare 18th century Chinese wallpaper, just like the one famously seen in her bedroom. A set of three Louis XVI style fauteuils by Jean-René Nadal, ébenisté to the French Crown as well as for the Comte d’Artois, grace the salon. Alongside the armchairs is a low straw tray on castors, a signature of the baroness, holding miniature Kangxi bowls.
