Freedom to dance. What does this mean to you?

An open letter to college dance grads...
Dear Dancer,
This time is exciting. And maybe scary. And maybe uncertain. You're working through all of the information, all of the experiences, all of the performances and lectures, and you're about to walk across a stage and hear your name said aloud to all in the room.
Hear me, please, when I tell you that this really is the beginning. You may have been told or led to believe that there is this brief window of opportunity and that you are in the middle of it. But may I tell you? No. There is far more than just half that is left for you. Far more.
Your best dancing likely won't even come for another ten to twenty years. Yeah, I know. That's possibly shocking for you to read. But hear me out. There is so much more life ahead, and by living you will learn so much more that will inform you as a person and as an artist. You will figure out who you are as a person and as an artist. You will become comfortable with both, and you will learn your worth as a person goes beyond who you will ever be as an artist. But still, you are an artist. Throughout the seasons of life that will come and go, you can always find a way to keep dancing. There will be ways you'll need to discover that will help you do that, and there will be ways you may adapt and work differently, but there is always a way for you to find to keep dancing.
I had someone tell me this at 19 years old. I believed him. And at 42, married for 20 years, raising four children, living in South Florida, I am at my peak as a dancer and most excited about my career. Now. College graduation? That was the beginning. And there are so many different ways to have and enjoy a fulfilling and beautiful career as a dancer that are all equally valid and wonderful.
So I encourage you... Go find yours. Keep dancing through the seasons. Don't be intimidated or disqualify yourself when you look at the careers others have. Instead be inspired by them and apply what lessons you can gain from others to what works for you and what is the path God has for you. By doing this, you not only will enjoy your own path, but you will be an encouraging presence to those around you as well.
Today was a wonderful day of dancing at Dance.All.Day Fest in West Palm Beach at The Square!
Our Artistic Director, .a.klein and our Associate Artistic Director, performed a duet, many of our friends performed and/or taught classes, and so many people came out and enjoyed it all. Such a fun time!
and the whole Natural Movers Foundation team are incredible! Follow them. Come be a part of what they are doing. Keep moving!

The Demetrius Klein Dance Company will perform THE INFINITE AND THE EVERLASTING: Two Sacred Dances by Demetrius Klein on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at 7:00 PM in the Helen K. Persson Hall at the Kravis Center. As well as presenting excerpts from audience favorite, Messiah, the Company will also perform Prayer Cycle, which was originally choreographed and presented by Mr. Klein in 2002.
“Prayer Cycle is one of those pieces that the dancers love to perform,” said Kristen Vencel, Associate Artistic Director. “There are so many beautifully powerful moments in both the music and dance that make this a very special and memorable experience for both the dancers inside the piece and audiences watching as well.”
Artistic Director Klein spoke about both pieces. “This is the 37th year that Messiah is being presented. I think of it as an ongoing journey, with several generations of dancers bringing their own unique interpretations to the movements. And Prayer Cycle is a work with a rich history, so we are really looking forward to performing it again. It truly is a favorite.”
Demetrius Klein Dance Company (501c3) is the oldest modern dance company in Palm Beach County and reaches out to the community by presenting dance in many venues and spaces, encouraging everyone to participate in the experience of dance.

As Ruth St Denis once said, dance is a "communication between body and soul to express what is too deep for words." Here at DKDC we believe that two foundational questions are important:
Who gets to dance?
And who gets to see dance?
We are asking for support from members of our community who also understand the importance of art and it's positive impact on the vitality of the lives in our community as we prepare for our biggest production of our 2023 season.

Demetrius Klein began creating Messiah 37 years ago. It has been performed with various casts, in a multitude of venues, in front of countless audiences, and has been an enthusiastically enjoyed part of the company’s repertoire ever since. This year, our performance of Messiah will be shared with a performance of Prayer Cycle, another special work.

Last year was full of incredible performances as we celebrated our director, .a.klein and his 60th birthday!
It started with our performance of Messiah in April. We had an incredible time with guest companies and guest artists, and we enjoyed the stage at the Kravis Center together for the first time since before the world shut down for a time.
It was rich with beauty and full of emotion.
This year, our performance of Messiah will include a performance of Prayer Cycle, another beloved piece by Demetrius Klein.
Saturday, April 8 at Persson Hall at The Kravis Center, West Palm Beach, Florida.
Save the date and make plans to come and see these two beautiful and beloved works. More details ahead...

Hey! It's been a while, but we are still here and still dancing.
This is one of our favorite quotes at DKDC and one we think too many overlook. What do you think? What does age look like in dance? How can it change? How should it change?
UPDATE: We are postponing this show due to unforseen circumstances. ❤️

Our Rehearsal Director, Kristen Vencel, not only has special memories with the pieces we will be dancing this Saturday night, but to make it even sweeter, her oldest daughter will be performing alongside her.
"It hit me during a recent rehearsal that when Meech was making this dance, Prayer Cycle, and I was dancing this piece for the first time, I was only a few years older than her. It was a special time in my life, and now she gets to be a part of it and experience this beautiful work with me. What a gift!" - Kristen Vencel, DKDC Rehearsal Director
