Eugene Calden wins Event 5 the Moneymaker Mulligan NLH Tournament at 100 years young!

Let me tell you about our friend Gene! Gene was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1923. He entered the Air Force at age 19 and was an Electrical Specialist. He served for three years as a sergeant and was stationed mostly in Naples, Italy, and Algiers. After the service, Gene travelled around the country doing various jobs, but he came back to New York and became a business representative for the painters and paperhangers’ union. He was the youngest official to ever be elected.

He was married to the love of his life, Eleanor, in 1952 and was married for 55 years. They had two children, Walter and Sue. He retired in his early 60’s and travelled extensively throughout Europe and took a 3-month trailer caravan trip through Mexico. He moved to Florida about 35 years ago.

Gene was always an accomplished bridge player and even taught bridge when he moved to Florida. Though Gene and Eleanor played bridge together, she did not approve of him gambling. Gene lost his beloved wife in 2006. After her passing, he started playing poker more often. He wrote a book titled Beginner’s Poker as well as a suspense novel; both are available on Amazon. He was always an athlete and played tennis until he was in his early 90s.
