Meet Studio 1608 Arist: Clemente

Born in 1937, artist Clemente Mimun lived his childhood years in Carthage, the ex-French colony of Tunisia. As the son of a gallery owner, Clemente immersed himself in the museums of LeBardo and Carthage - abundant with Roman and Phoenician art - all of which left an indelible impression. At the age of 16, Clemente moved to Paris where he spent countless hours in the coffeehouses absorbing the philosophical conversations of elder artists. To this day, Clemente acknowledges these experiences in the development of his own personal philosophies on existentialism and self-responsibility – transpiring in the motivation for his artwork.

By 1962, Clemente settled in the United States. Today, his universal language is spoken through his art. Clemente explains that his work is born of a synergy between memory and imagination. He uses no models, pictures or still life arrangements when creating a new work of art. A self-proclaimed “observer,” Clemente chooses to elicit an intellectual formula for his subject matter that he describes through a hierarchy of interpersonal understanding:

On the first level, Clemente strives to expose one’s isolation from the rest of the world and the inevitable “antagonistic possession” that lies in our relationships therein. The second level involves an attempt to communicate to resolve this antagonism – not through the complexity of words, but through the simplicity of symbolism. The third level is reconciliation – a resolution to consume and accept a peaceful coexistence. In other words, the artist states: “Why not say it with flowers?"

MeetStudio 1608 Arist: Bob Hiemstra

Bob’s work, simultaneously figurative and abstract, focuses on the human figure and the landscape of coastal Maine and Florida. Working mostly with oil paint and oil sticks, gouache, and Flashe, the images he creates seem both familiar, and yet somehow not of a specific place, time, or person.

Meet Studio 1608 Artist: Camilla Webster

Camilla, a now globally recognized artist, resides in Palm Beach. Her often-epic museum collected paintings have focused on the essence of the human spirit, connection, healing, and the societal issues in our midst through abstracted landscapes and seascapes.

It is the light and color of South Florida, that draws Camilla pack to Palm Beach, where her studio sits just one block down from The Norton Museum of Art. The unique creative space draws hundreds of visitors a year seeking a unique experience with the artist.

Fine artists come to their careers through many paths, but one thing Camilla Webster shares with them all is her ability to draw on her life experience to create her beautiful and intense canvases. She credits her years as an accomplished and award-winning TV & print journalist covering the globe as the life-experience build up to reaching her artistic self.

Meet Studio 1608 artist: Weatherly Stroh

Weatherly is an accomplished artist whose work centers around animals and landscapes. Oil is her preferred medium, with a technique characterized by sweeping brush strokes and textural layers. While much of her work is done on canvas, she also paints on aluminum and stretched linen.

The natural world has always been a bountiful source of inspiration for Weatherly. Growing up on a farm in rural Michigan nourished her deep bond to the rhythms of nature and infused her unbridled love of animals. The vibrant light and natural beauty of Florida offer yet another profound source of inspiration. A profusion of flora and fauna flourish under an ever-changing sky, and Weatherly captures the perpetual motion of sea and sky in her striking landscapes.

Travel is another great passion, and Weatherly searches the world to find the inspiring landscapes and animals she can immortalize in her art. Propelled by her natural curiosity, she constantly looks for fresh ways to express beauty, color and emotion.

A passionate advocate for nature and animals, Stroh donates a portion of the proceeds from her work to a variety of animal welfare and land preservation organizations.
