5 skills to train to be a collegiate dancer⬇️
1. ATTENTION TO DETAILS
The strongest dancers don’t just “do” choreography. They apply corrections immediately and pay attention to every detail; everything from fingers, eye focus, head placement, timing, finishes, and textures.
2. UNIFORMITY OVER INDIVIDUALITY
College dance teams are built on dancers moving as one. Matching style, energy, motion quality, and ex*****on across an entire team is what creates that elite collegiate look.
3. PERFORMANCE THAT PROJECTS
College dancers know how to perform BIG. Whether it’s a football field or basketball arena, movement and facials must project to an audience much farther away than a traditional stage setting.
4. MOVEMENT QUALITY
Every arm placement, transition, angle, and pathway has purpose. Clean dancers understand how to finish movement fully and create clarity in choreography.
5. SPATIAL AWARENESS
Knowing your spacing, maintaining formations, hitting windows, and staying aware of the full visual picture are major parts of collegiate performance. Precision and awareness matter.
The dancers who stand out at college tryouts are usually the ones who have already been training these skills long before auditions begin. 👀
Dancers can schedule an evaluation with former Division I Head Dance Team Coach, Tess Liantonio, to receive feedback on their current strengths, weaknesses, and overall collegiate readiness.
