While it has been a very busy few weeks of Christmas Bazaars, many of you may not know that I’ve also been training for a promotional test in Taekwondo to 6th Dan Black Belt. I don’t often post about it, but I feel it important to share something that is such a huge part of my life. I’ve been training with Grand Master David Keller at Jay’s Taekwondo for 21 years. I have in that time competed at the national level, become a local and national referee, and become a master instructor with the school. I was not planning on advancing again, but the opportunity to test under the founder of our school, Supreme Great Grand Master Jay Dunston was too great to pass up. I am honored to have had the chance and proud of myself for not allowing my fears and doubts keep me from it.

For those looking for my pottery work before Christmas, I will be returning to Jay’s Taekwondo in eagle river this Saturday, Dec. 20th for their annual holiday bazaar. Since I have been focused on testing this past week and suffered a fairly serious injury, I cannot promise how much new product I will have available. I will however be taking whatever I have left to Meadow Lakes Market and Black Birch Books for the last days before Christmas for anyone interested but not able to make this Saturday. Thank you everyone for your patience and support this season!

P.s. I totally made pots with the express purpose of breaking them as part of my demonstration. The confetti was Grand Master Keller’s idea 😆
The creative weapon was knitting needles as a nod to my love of fiber arts

Happy Monday! As the first snow has landed in my yard I guess I have to concede it’s winter now. Time to stoke the woodstove and get back to the studio. Hope to see you at these wonderful holiday shows coming up. Until then, stay warm and be safe on the roads util we all remember how to drive in snow again.

P.s. anyone else need 20 takes to get one video? Keeping it real over here.

I present pt 2 in my mountain mug process. I had to break it down further into pulling handles, trimming the mug body, carving the mountains, and attaching handles. This is everything that happens at the leather hard stage. I admit I overwhelmed myself with how many I made at once, which you might think I would have learned better by now, but no… maybe next time. On the plus side, my new plaster damp boxes have helped tremendously in keeping all the parts at the right softness over the several days it took to complete all the steps. I couldn’t help but share the shelf my husband helped me design and create for the hanging planters I made this month, as well as Kepler being his usual cute self interrupting my work.

The current time per mug is:
3 min thrown
30 sec handle pull
6 min trim
6 min mountain carving
7 min handle attaching
=22.5 minutes hands on time

Come back for part three, glazing.

Sunny workdays are the best. I even pulled my wheel outside so I could enjoy the gorgeous weather. I thought I would share my process as many of you have asked how long it takes to make each item. I’ve started timing each stage of a mountain mug to find out. I make everything in batches so it’s often hard to isolate one thing. Stage one is throwing the form. This one was 2:40, or about 3 minutes if you include wedging the clay first. Throwing has always been the most fun stage for me as it’s where you really see an object come to life. Come back for part 2: trimming.

Just a few of the new items I’ll have at my next show. I had a good time experimenting with denting the tumblers in different ways to see which ones feel best when held. The bottles and goblets turned out so cool with the squished sides. I hope you all like them as much as I do.

While I wait for another kiln full of pottery to cool, I thought I would share more of my process of fiber art side quests. While I will have these for sale at my next show, I do still consider this a hobby. I do it for fun and I’m selling some to fund buying more wool 😅. Special thanks to for the soap, felting tools, and for teaching me how to wet felt, and for the wool I used today. Let me know what you think.
