"Emotional Pond" was our talking point about depicting emotions as colors in my online Zoom course "Color and fiber art". Students have been very creative about doing homework exercises out of materials at hand when in-person shopping has been difficult. (That said, a shout out is due to Capital Quilts for their help with drive by fabric pick-up.)

Based on the great response to this class I will do more, starting in a few weeks. Let me know if you are interested.

Be well.

April 9, 2020. Completed at last. The request from Padre Javier was for hangings for Holy Week with the motifs of nails, crown of thorns and a cross. This is my version of the design. In January and February a committee of stitchers from Ascension planned the project, selected the background fabrics and made the basic pieces. The decoration was my assignment and an excellent project to do at home while self isolating.

There are online services every day this week. New backdrop hangings are my Lenten offering and an encouragement to my beloved congregation. "Serve where you can with the gifts given to you."

Today's studio project is face masks. A friend posted that she had no extra fabric at home, and doesn't sew so to make a mask was a huge obstacle. She's getting masks in the mail from me.

I have several patterns and will be glad to talk about the various options.

This is the most recent quilt in my ongoing kolam series. Having to stay home rather than go to work in various places has opened up studio time. Look what happened. The dots here are vintage metal beads. Kolam are a daily mindfulness practice and creating yet another kolam quilt is deeply satisfying. A good day.

Sometimes a client asks for a quilt that's a bit outside my usual style, like a Cessna portrait. He's very happy with this result and I learned a lot. I'm not giving up my preferred modes of expression, but, hey, this was a growth edge. 15 x 30" mounted over stretched canvas.

Quilts and Being Well A quilt is about something more than just a sewn blanket. Sometimes it evokes being cared for and tucked in by a loved one. Or it speaks of making something beautiful out of leftovers.

I will be teaching at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC this weekend. Our topic is Improvisational Quiltmaking from repurposed garments, as inspired by the amazing quilts of Gee's Bend. This intuitive approach to design and creation is very freeing for those of us who have agonized over perfect intersections.

This sample is made from my own life fabrics - shortened shirts, a corduroy shirt that shrank in the closet, pieces of clothing belonging to Daddy and Mom. It felt different to cut up clothes I've worn. I have made more than 100 t-shirt quilts from other people's garments, which is very special. Cutting and designing with my own things, to please only myself, was touching on a new way.

I will be hand quilting this during the weekend and will post again when it is finished.

Have you always wanted to learn how to quilt?
Not only is quilting fun and a time to enjoy socializing with others, but studies have found that pursuing creative passions can help improve your brain. In this class, you will create a small 14”x19” quilt complete with borders and binding. You will learn how to select, mark, and cut fabric; make a template, press, and arrange fabric blocks into a quilt top. You will cut and attach borders with a basic running stitch; and complete your project by basting, quilting, and binding. This project is done entirely by hand; sewing machines are not required nor accommodated. Supply list is available on the LLI website.
