String players and violin adorers, pick yourself up a copy of the September-October issue to find out how Huang—hot on the heels of releasing his debut recording of sonatas by Saint-Saëns, Respighi, Chopin, and Paganini—fell “madly in love with the violin and with sharing the gift of this beautiful music” at age seven.

Our summer entertainment staff picks come to a close with a bebopping biographical recommendation from Digital Content Manager Alex Galiatsatos.

“Miles: The Autobiography” is a holds-nothing-back memoir from jazz trumpeter and musical force Miles Davis. “If you’re into jazz, love Miles Davis, or are just interested in the behind-the-scenes culture (and sometimes even legends and lore) of the artistic community of the era, this is a must-read. In addition to opening up about his own struggles and speaking out on issues like the racism experienced in the music industry, Davis mainly shares stories of his life as a working musician with other jazz players like Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker, Thelonious Monk, Mingus, Coltrane, and so much more. And, man… do you hear some stories!”

Piano with four-hands—the technique of two performers playing one piano—rose in notoriety during the mid-18th century. Did you know that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was known for performing these unique duets with his sister Maria Anna Mozart (depicted here) while on tour? In 1777, music historian Charles Burney composed a set of four-hand sonatas which are generally considered the first to appear in print.

On October 30 at The Kennedy Center Terrace Theater, Hayes Piano Series alumna Simone Dinnerstein and Awadagin Pratt continue on this unique collaborative tradition in a piano four-hand program that is not to be missed! The pair will perform works by Bach, Brahms, Glass, Schubert, and Beethoven. https://bit.ly/DinnersteinPratt

The Washington Performing Arts summer beach reads and flick staff picks continue with a book recommendation from Manager of the Office of the President & CEO Helen Edwards.

“The Storyteller’s Death,” a novel by Ann Dávila Cardinal, is one of family ties, the power of memory, and murder set on the Island of Enchantment — Puerto Rico. Resonating personally on the themes of family and heritage, Helen says, “The author fearlessly explores the emulsion of American and Latin culture in a way that I always wished to see growing up.”

The Washington Performing Arts staff shares their beach reads and flick picks this summer. Marketing & Communications Manager Cassandra Gibson is here with “The Stranger,” a heavy-hitting novella, widely regarded as the masterpiece of French philosopher Albert Camus.

First published in 1946 and based in the absurdist philosophy of the universe’s irrational nature, “The Stranger” tracks the seemingly random events in the life of Meursault, an indifferent man drawn into a senseless murder on an Algerian beach. With the intrigue of a psychological thriller, Camus explores what he termed "the nakedness of man faced with the absurd" and describes the condition of reckless alienation and spiritual exhaustion. Have you read this classic?

"The Fraud Squad” by Kyla Zhao is about Samantha Song and the lengths to which she’ll go to achieve her dream of making a name for herself in Singapore’s elite social circles writing for a high-society magazine. Impoverished and struggling to help her mom make ends meet, Song must battle more than just her low social upbringing on her journey to self-fulfillment. HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAZEL SCOTT| This year, we honor the 101st birthday of the legendary jazz pianist and vocalist, Hazel Scott. Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad on June 11, 1920, Scott was exposed to music at an early age through her mother’s music students and could play the piano by ear by the age of three. She went on to attend The Juilliard School at only eight years old, a piano prodigy. During her teenage years, Scott was performing all over New York City with top performing ensembles including Count Basie’s Big Band and Broadway shows. Scott’s performances were lauded for “jazzing the classics”. She challenged the racial prejudices prevalent in Hollywood, refusing to perform for segregated audiences and advocating for equal pay.

The United States Air Force Band is proud to collaborate with Washington Performing Arts to champion the legacy of Hazel Scott. We hope you enjoy this tribute to her legacy with musical performances of “Summertime” (featuring Technical Sgt. Stacey Holliday from The United States Air Force Band’s Singing Sergeants), “Piano Concerto in One Movement” by Florence Price, and “Rhapsody in Blue” featuring piano soloist Michelle Cann.

After more than a year of virtual session due to the pandemic, so happy to finally have an Embassy Adoption Program visit at John Eaton Elementary and meet the students & teachers , following strict health & safety protocols.
