The New Century American Irish-Arts Company is a private, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to the artistic pursuit and preservation of Irish Traditional music and dance in the United States. We help traditional musicians, dancers, teachers, and researchers produce vocational work that brings traditional culture to the public.

On Friday, 13 March, the New Century's board voted to suspend all of its in-public operations in an effort to deprive SARS-CoV-2 of every possible host. This suspension includes the New Century's in-person event support and in-person classes. We are working with teachers to support the continuation of classes online.

While we take action in the interest of public safety, we want to call attention to the economic emergency that COVID-19 is causing for traditional musicians, dance teachers, and publicans (and their staff!) who rely on their income from St Patrick’s Day as a ship relies on its anchor. It will take many of us working together to recover from this upset. We also want to highlight that this disease poses grave injury to our community, as we revere and rely on so many of our elder musicians who are vulnerable to the worst ravages of the illness. Please consider going to the store for them so that they aren’t in public. You can leave the shopping on their doorstep, and say hello from a distance.

Those who default to criticism of art work may be quick to observe that the livelihood of musicians was among the first casualties of COVID-19. Such pronouncements are proffered when libraries of music are procurable at the press of a button. Music is a language we learn to love together, and learn to speak in solitude. In what we hope will be quiet days to come, we urge you to reflect on music and its value in your life. If you don’t play, this is an extraordinary opportunity to start; if you do play, well, what else are you going to do?
