NOW, IT'S THE ERIE CANAL
The Engineering Marvel Joins The Columbus Monument in a Growing List of Condemnation by Syracuse Mayor, Ben Walsh
“… they say we all lived happily ever after, and we all know that was far from the case."
Mayor Ben Walsh conveyed a negative assessment of the Erie Canal when he spoke at a recent event in Syracuse.
"This exhibit makes us think even more about I-81 and the Erie Canal, and the ripple effects they left in our community to this day," said Mayor Walsh. "We all know the good stuff, but that isn't always the full story. I applaud and appreciate the Canal Museum for telling the story of these projects in Syracuse from different perspectives.”
“… they say we all lived happily ever after, and we all know that was far from the case.”
Considered by many historians as one of the great achievements of American engineering, the Erie Canal linked the thriving commercial harbor of New York to the burgeoning farms and factories of the Midwest. The project was completed in 1821 to form a 363 mile waterway for barges and boats to transport raw material and finished goods from West to East. The Erie Canal provided a blueprint for great canals to come such as the Suez Canal and Panama Canal.
In a digital press release by the Columbus Monument Corporation, an organization now suing to save the Columbus Monument from being removed by Mayor Walsh, the negative spin of alternative history by the mayor was specifically identified.
"Instead of focusing on the miraculous achievement of building the Eric Canal," states the press release, "and how it enabled trade from Europe through New York City to the mid-west, Walsh instead chose to focus on the negative. Sound familiar?"
The memo showed a taped interview of Mayor Walsh denouncing the profound discoveries of Christopher Columbus.
"The Columbus Monument Corp has offered to work with the City to display other stories and perspectives around the Columbus Monument. But Walsh has ignored us, instead USING YOUR TAX DOLLARS in an attempt to destroy it."
"All history is messy. But where would Syracuse be without the Route 81, the Erie Canal, and the immigrants who helped to build it at the turn of the century?"
"Tell Mayor Walsh to apply the same standards to all of Syracuse’s important history, and end his attempt to destroy the historic Columbus Monument."

AUSTRALIA ELECTS ANTHONY ALBANESE, FIRST PRIME MINISTER OF ITALIAN DESCENT
First Non-English Celtic to Lead the Country
- His Father is from Barletta Province, Apulia
Australians have elected their first prime minister of Italian descent, Anthony Albanese. Leader of the Labor Party, Mr. Albanese challenged the incumbent Scott Morrison to win a decisive electoral victory. Australia is a country with 1 million residents of Italian descent, almost five percent of the total population. Mr. Albanese grew up without knowing his father, Carlo. In fact, he was told, as a boy, that his father had died. After he was elected a member of parliament in 1996, he utilized contacts to track down his paternal line. Carlo was living in Barletta, in the Apulia region. Mr. Albanese was able to make contact with Carlo to meet him in Italy. Pictured is Australia's newly elected prime minister, Anthony Albanese, a photo of Carlo as a steward for TSS Fairchild, where he met Mr. Albanese's mother, Maryann, shown seated, right, with friends. A photo was taken of Mr. Albanese when he, his wife and child visited his father, Carlo, in 2009.
