It's a love story about a husband who struggles as his wife battles breast cancer. The Actual Dance is a play written and performed by Sam Simon. It is has been called raw and difficult, yet graceful and inspirational. The show is also a workshop on how to find the beauty, dignity and love in one of the most difficult tasks in life: being with the person you have loved most in the world through th

e end of life. In the spring of 2000, Sam's wife Susan was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. That diagnosis and subsequent treatments took both of them on a roller coaster ride that moved from elation to despair and back again. The Actual Dance is a presentation of that ride from Sam's perspective. Through performance and engagement with audiences, Sam has come to understand that there is a hunger for engagement on this topic. The Actual Dance itself offers a perspective not often found, that of the “partner” of the person confronted with life-threatening disease. It is also a male voice in the breast cancer journey facing so many people, primarily women. The experience of writing and performing this play has also transformed Sam, who has also begun to write poetry based on the play. Every performance is followed by a discussion, a time when the audience gets to verbalize their own feelings and reactions not only to the play but to their own journey and experiences. Audiences have included members of the public, churches and synagogues, medical professionals including nurses and physicians, clergy, staff of cancer support organizations and those who themselves or their loved ones are going through illness. Remembering a friend Prudence Wright Holmes We were theatrical colleagues, and had a special relationship. She and I would "market" our respective plays --- Me The Actual Dance, She a pleathora of them, put Willa Cather is one -- we would call once a week, on a connected phone line, listening to each ohter "pitch" to the whomever we called. We hadn't talked in a while, and I had not realized she was ill. She stayed at our home whenever she was in DC and performing somewhere.

A reminder that this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Perhaps you didn't know that my life and that of my wife, Susan, now 58 years -- has been "gifted us" with the experience of receiving a diagnosis with a terminal (death) result. I am on my journey with Alzheimer's disease.

Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, and during that diagnostic and treatment period, her doctors pulled me aside and let me know that they thought she would not survive and that I should get "ready." Meaning the end could be imminent. She is today and continues to be an unlikely survivor of the particular conditions she faced in light of her family history. Her mother had passed away from breast cancer at about the same age. (54 years old)

As we approach the mid-way point of Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2024 -- I wanted to remind folks that there is an award-winning book that tells this story.

October is almost here! Breast Cancer Awareness Month My first play -- Actual Dance which chronicles my journey as the "LovePartner" through Susan Simon breast cancer journey. There was a moment when the doctors told me to "get ready." I wrote a play and then the book -- my first play. And now Susan and I have reversed roles -- she is my "lovepartner" as she is on the "get ready" side of this journey. And there is now of course the new play Dementia Man - A New Play chornicling my journey with this disease. Hoping to be the outlier -- the one who lasts the longest with the disease.
