Some Big Bear viewers think Sandy is becoming much bolder than Luna around feeding time lately… while others believe Luna is simply more careful and intelligent before reacting. But after watching Jackie and Shadow raise these two for weeks now, one thing is becoming very clear: Sandy and Luna are starting to handle prey very differently.

One thing I’ve noticed about Sandy and Luna lately is that even when they’re completely exhausted… they still somehow find energy to bother each other.

These two can look half asleep in the nest, barely keeping their eyes open after a long feeding day, and then suddenly one of them starts nudging, leaning, or quietly messing with the other for absolutely no reason.

You can really see the comfort level between them now too. Neither eaglet seems bothered by constant closeness anymore. They nap pressed against each other, wake each other up accidentally, steal each other’s space, then go right back to resting side by side like nothing happened.

What makes it funny is how different their personalities seem during these sleepy moments. One will clearly be trying to settle down while the other keeps initiating tiny interactions like they’re refusing to let the nest become fully quiet. It’s the eagle version of siblings annoying each other right before falling asleep.

Luna was getting all the attention from Jackie, completely enjoying the little grooming session like the youngest child who knows mom is focused entirely on them for the moment.
And honestly, once you notice Sandy staring, you can’t unsee it.

That eaglet looked SO interested in what Luna was getting. Not food this time. Not space in the nest. Just attention from Jackie. The kind of quiet little bonding moment both eaglets still seem to crave even while getting bigger and more independent every day.

But the funniest part? Jackie barely acknowledged Sandy at all.

What I love about this nest lately is that the eaglets’ personalities are becoming impossible to ignore now. Sandy has started acting more confident around feeding and movement in the nest, but emotionally? Sometimes you can still catch little moments where Sandy looks like a kid wanting the exact same reassurance Luna is getting.

I’ve watched this nest for a long time, and honestly… this might’ve been one of the first moments where Sandy stopped looking like just another eaglet and started looking protective of Luna.

Because that snake was not supposed to be that close to them.

The second people spotted it moving along the edge of the nest, you could feel the entire mood shift. Not in some dramatic movie way. More like the kind of silence that happens when everyone suddenly realizes something dangerous has entered the wrong place.

And what really got me was Sandy’s reaction.

Instead of shrinking back immediately, Sandy instinctively moved closer toward Luna’s side, almost putting his own body between Luna and the snake while trying to keep eyes on both Jackie and the movement near the branches. It didn’t feel planned. It felt automatic.

That’s what made the moment hit so hard for me.

We spend so much time watching these two compete over food and space lately that it’s easy to forget they’re still siblings growing up together in a nest where danger can appear without warning. But when something genuinely threatening showed up, the rivalry disappeared instantly.

Sandy and Luna’s high-protein meal came from a local nest-pesterer, which Jackie quickly turned into dinner

A predator in the nest usually triggers a cacophony of panicked cries and frantic wing-flapping. But as the snake slithered over the rim of the nest, Sandy and Luna didn't panic.

The two eaglets, their dark juvenile feathers glistening in the afternoon sun, remained remarkably calm. Having been raised by the fierce and vigilant Jackie, they seemed to have inherited her steely resolve. Instead of retreating, they stood their ground, their sharp gazes locked onto the reptilian intruder.

She stood as a silent sentinel, her white head glowing against the green pine needles. Her posture was relaxed, yet her eyes never left her children. She was allowing them to find their own strength, to realize that they were the masters of this high-altitude domain. She didn't need to intervene; she could see the courage in the way they held their wings and the steady rhythm of their breathing.

Ultimately, the snake, sensing the overwhelming presence of the two growing raptors and the silent threat of the matriarch nearby, decided the gamble wasn't worth it. It slipped back through the sticks and vanished into the shadows of the tree.

In the world of Jackie and Shadow, ravens often play the role of the cunning antagonist. They are intelligent, agile, and remarkably bold. However, when that boldness crosses the line and threatens the safety of Sandy and Luna, the ravens must learn a devastating lesson about the true authority of the sky's sovereigns.

It began with a series of mocking caw-caw cries. A large raven, relying on its superior maneuverability, began diving close to the nest. It was a calculated move, timed perfectly with Shadow’s arrival with a fresh trout. The raven hoped that the flurry of activity during the meal would create a gap a momentary lapse in focus that would allow it to sn**ch a piece of the prize.

The raven attempted a series of desperate, sharp turns in mid-air, hoping to lose its pursuer. But Shadow, with his immense wingspan and superior aerial combat skills, closed the distance in seconds. His warning cries echoed through the valley like thunderclaps, signaling a wrath that the raven was ill-equipped to handle.

The dogfight was brief but intense. In a final, panicked attempt to escape, the raven dipped too low, falling right into the strike zone of Shadow’s iron talons. A powerful buffet from Shadow’s wing and a near-miss from his beak sent the raven into a tailspin.

Every day, Sandy and Luna are learning something new.
Every stretch, every step, every call, every balance test, every alert look, every sibling interaction is part of becoming eagles. And these soft moments matter just as much as the big ones. Because growing up is not only about wings and strength — it is also about connection.
One day, these two will not be sitting beak-to-beak in the nest like this.
One day, those feet will grip higher branches.
One day, those wings will open wide over Big Bear.
One day, their calls will carry from beyond the nest bowl.
One day, Sandy and Luna will step into the next chapter of their wild lives. 🪽🥹
But today, we still get this.
A sibling beakie moment.
Jackie and Shadow always standing guard.
The lake glowing behind them.
Big yellow feet tucked among the sticks.
Dark feathers shining in the light.
And two beautiful growing eaglets reminding us why we are so attached to this family. ❤️

A surprise gift falling straight from the sky and the master provider behind it is none other than Shadow!

While Jackie is meticulously tending to the nest bowl and checking on her large, sleeping eaglets, Shadow stands tall and proud right beside her, having just dropped in to ensure his family has everything they need.

Shadow often utilizes his elite flying skills to land silently on the upper branches or approach smoothly from above before dropping his catch onto the nest floor. To the sleepy eaglets below, it looks exactly like delicious treasures are magically falling out of the clear blue sky!

Raising two rapidly growing eaglets like Sandy and Luna (who are proudly sporting their dark juvenile feathers) requires an astronomical amount of daily calories. Shadow takes his role as the primary hunter incredibly seriously, working non-stop to ensure the pantry is consistently stocked with fresh protein.

Sandy’s Spa Day with Jackie
Jackie, displaying her incredible maternal instincts, is performing a delicate grooming ritual for her eaglet, Sandy.
Jackie uses her powerful yet skillful yellow beak to nibble and gently work through Sandy’s neck and back feathers. In the bird world, this is called preening. It’s not just about cleaning parasites or smoothing feathers; it’s a vital social behavior used to strengthen the emotional bond between parent and chick.
Sandy lying perfectly still, eyes half-closed, stretching its neck out in total relaxation. The eaglet appears to be completely at ease, soaking up every second of motherly care. For fast-growing eaglets, these "massage" sessions help reduce stress and foster a sense of security within the nest.
With the deep blue waters of Big Bear Lake and the rolling mountains in the distance, the contrast between the majestic nature of these raptors and this tender act of kindness is truly captivating. It’s a beautiful reminder that even the fiercest predators in the sky have a soft side for family.

Jackie had been standing sentinel over her two rapidly growing eaglets, Sandy and Luna. The chicks were resting heavily in the center bowl, their mottled brown juvenile feathers blending seamlessly into the dry cedar bark and pine needles. Suddenly, Jackie’s sharp yellow eyes locked onto a movement just above the tree line.

She lowered her head, her stark white crest feathers bristling, and let out a sharp, piercing series of warning calls that echoed off the surrounding timber. Inside the nest bowl, Sandy and Luna instinctively flattened themselves against the sticks, knowing the drill.

Before Jackie could even prepare to launch, a familiar shadow crossed the sun.

Shadow dropped onto the heavy back branch with the effortless grace of a seasoned hunter. He didn't carry a fish or a new stick today; he carried the absolute authority of a protective father. He stepped down into the nest fortress, standing tall and broad right behind his young. His dark, intelligent eyes scanned the horizon, taking in the threat in a fraction of a second.

He leaned down slightly, his presence instantly anchoring the nest. To the trembling eaglets, his arrival communicated a silent, unbreakable promise: "It’s okay, family. Daddy is here."
