The Great Depression to today. Some things changed. Some didn't. 🎸

Economic hardship then: 1 in 4 Americans out of work. Economic hardship now: rising costs, stagnant wages, a shrinking middle class.

Displacement then: Dust Bowl families fled west by the hundreds of thousands. Displacement now: entire communities still priced out and pushed out.

Protest music then: Woody sang for the people the system left behind. Protest music now: a new generation of songwriters carries the same fight.

Woody Guthrie didn't write history. He wrote the present tense. And his music is going underground, live in DC, this October.

Woody Guthrie wrote that line in 1939. David M Lutken, who devised WOODY SEZ 19 years ago and has performed it in more than 80 productions around the world, says it's his favorite line Woody ever wrote. He fought to get it into the show, and it landed exactly where he wanted it.
Some things don't age. They just wait for the right moment.

Did you know hootenannies trace directly back to Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger? 🎸
In 1940, Woody and Pete were in Seattle playing union organizing songs on the docks when some workers invited them to their "hootenanny," a gathering where everybody sits around, plays, sings, and sometimes dances. Woody and Pete brought it back to New York, and with the Almanac Singers started hosting weekly get-togethers in Greenwich Village, calling them hootenannies.

We're continuing that tradition. Three free hootenannies this October, every Sunday after the show. Bring whatever instrument nobody lets you play at home. Come sing with us.

"The more you know about his life, the more his music means." 🎸

David M Lutken didn't write WOODY SEZ. He devised it, alongside Nick Corley, Darcie Deaville, Helen Jean Russell, and Andy Teirstein, building the script from Woody's own newspaper columns, his autobiography Bound for Glory, and the words he left behind about his own life.

Since premiering at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2007, the show has traveled to more than 80 productions around the world. China. Israel and the West Bank. Europe, the British Isles, and all over the United States.

Now it comes to DC with new material and a new company: Margaret Dudasik, Hubby Jenkins, and Raquel Chavez join David on stage, directed by Georgette Verdin.

And underneath it all, in David's words: somewhere back in there, we have social justice in mind. A little drop in the bucket of whatever that might mean to people.

Three words on a guitar. 🎸

In 1941, Woody Guthrie painted a message on his instrument: THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS.
He wasn't calling for violence. He was making a claim about what a song could do.

That music could puncture propaganda. That a ballad could stand up for people the powerful wanted to forget. That an ordinary man with six strings could fight ideas with better ones.

Plenty of musicians have borrowed the slogan since. Pete Seeger answered it with his own banjo inscription: this machine surrounds hate and forces it to surrender.

Eighty-five years later, the guitar is long gone, but the claim still stands. Songs are machines. It matters what you build with them.
