I sold a pen and watercolor piece like this at the Art Walk, and since so many people had expressed interest, I thought I’d create another in the same vein…and maybe more to come if/as time allows between other projects.
I was referencing both my original photo and a scan of the piece I sold. I love looking up into cherry trees, to see them arching above me, like this. Here I’ve used my watercolor pens, which allows you to apply the pigment with a marker-like applicator before you then activate the pigment with water and a brush. I enjoyed watching the video afterward and realizing sometimes I had both brush and pen in one hand at the same time 😆

This is me, investing a large sum into my next round of ornaments! It’s a scary, unglamorous part of being a small business owner with a product-based business: deciding how much money to tie up in inventory, not knowing how well/soon (and sometimes whether!) I’ll be able to sell it.
Sometimes it helps if I ask myself, “What would Guy Malick do?” My dad (Guy) was an inventory genius — it was a key part of his industrial fastener business model to invest in hard-to-get inventory that he would stockpile so that when a customer needed something rare last-minute, he could save the day and fill the order. Yes, it meant investing a lot ahead of time, but it really tickled him when he could swoop in, say yes to an order, and rescue a panicked buyer.
What would Guy do? He would err on the side of more inventory…now if only there were more room in our tiny Capitol Hill home to store it all 😆

Timelapse Tuesday has a nice ring to it, but I figured everyone could use something to brighten your dreary Monday, so here’s some footage ahead of time.
I created art of Mott’s Market back in 2022, when news broke that it would be closing, before local folks banded together to buy it and rejuvenate it. I figured it was time to work on a new rendering, capturing its new essence!
If you haven’t been yet, it’s worth a trip. I especially love their chicken salad sandwich — it is truly crave-worthy!

A quick pen and watercolor sketch of a scene I enjoyed spotting at Lincoln Park this week!
Have a good weekend, everyone! I won’t be vending at Eastern Market this weekend but you can still order through my website (link in bio👆typically I fill orders within a few hours, and you can pick up from my home by Lincoln Park).
Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to some quality time with my son — we have a date to check out the newly reopened Southeast Library, hit East City Bookshop and then get dinner at Hill East Burger — and getting to watch his Little League game tomorrow, which I missed last week during the Art Walk 🍔⚾️
