There are still a few openings for our Batik painting class this coming Saturday at Longrow Lavender! We will have so much fun. As a bonus, I will be bringing some beautiful tjaps (handmade cooper fabric stamps) so that you can try your hand at fabric stamping! It will be a good time, so join us if you can.

Our basket class went great on Saturday! A few students asked if we could do the flower basket class yet this year, but alas, the lavender farm has no openings. So it looks like it won’t be until next year for this beauty!

Upcoming Classes!

Just an update...we have two upcoming classes at Longrow Lavender.

September 18 - The first class is a basket class and has sold out! We will be making a versatile basket that will hold most anything and everything, with really fun decorative accents.

October 9 - The second class will be a new one for me to teach...Batik fabric painting. In conjunction with Malaysian artist Munirah Rimer of Teratai Malaysia, I will demonstrate the Batik process, and then students will have a chance to paint their own fabric art. I will also have some fun wax fabric stamps available to play with and try. Hurry - registration is limited to ten students!

I hope to see you soon! (Social distancing and precautions will be in place.)

I made my first-ever batch of wax for Batiking. I followed Munirah Rimer’s recipe of one pound each of beeswax and paraffin. It was a fun process...like making candles without a wick! I am looking forward to a virtual class with Munirah this Sunday. She will be teaching us how to use the Hmong tool to add the resist (the wax) to make fine lines and details. The tool is simple in design but quite effective! The cloth under the tool shows how detailed you can get. I can’t wait to learn how to use it.

Oops - how did that picture of my adorable granddaughter get in this post!

UPDATE: Due to extreme weather changes (not that I leave my musical instruments outside), the hammered dulcimer suffered a major crack in the soundboard. According to the wonderful folks at Musicmakers, it doesn’t affect the sound, but it is something I will have to get repaired or I will have to rebuild. Thankfully, Claire (my harp) didn’t suffer any damage!

==========================================

Well I didn’t get to those old projects...instead I remained in the luthier (stringed instrument maker - I learned that quite recently) mode and built a hammered dulcimer. It is a very interesting instrument to play because - as suggested by the name - you use hammers to strike the strings. The tone is amazing and it is challenging to learn. I would suggest listening to Joshua Messick, an amazing hammered dulcimer artist. He has YouTube videos - take a listen. You will be enchanted!

Now my studio time will be interrupted for a couple of weeks to do some interior wall painting!

Take care,
Pat

I want to share my latest art medium (aka obsession). Batik! This is a really fun, stress-free art form. I began with a virtual class with Munirah Rimer at Teratai Malaysia on the painting technique...which led to another virtual class on Tjanting - applying wax resist to create a design...which will lead to another class...and another! Sounds like a shampoo commercial, doesn’t it?

So here are some of the completed pieces which can be used as framed wall art or as a scarf or handkerchief.

Here’s what has been happening in the studio lately...I built this from a kit. It will take over fifty tunings to get her settled in...but after four days, I am able to play a song without too much dissonance! Now I need to move on to all those old projects that need to be completed!

All the best in these strange times,
Pat

In-Studio Class!

So I have a couple of friends who want to make a garden basket, so I will be offering a one-day class this Friday, July 19 at 10:00 am. Please message me if you are interested. The cost for the class and all needed supplies is $60 and will be at my home studio. We will have lunch and enjoy a day of basket weaving.
