JOSEPHY CENTER LAUNCHES NEW EXHIBITION ON THE BEAUTY OF THE ZUMWALT PRAIRIE
JOSEPH – (Press release from the Josephy Center for Arts and Culture) The Josephy Center for Arts & Culture is pleased to announce Wild Landscape – Zumwalt Revisited, a new exhibition celebrating the breathtaking beauty, ecology, and enduring spirit of Zumwalt Prairie—one of North America’s last great native grasslands.
The exhibition opens with a public reception on Friday, July 31 at 7:00 p.m. Guests are invited to enjoy an evening of art, community, and conversation featuring music by Seth Kinzie, refreshments, and beverages as they experience new works inspired by the vast landscapes of Wallowa County.
Through painting, photography, and sculpture, participating artists explore the character of the Zumwalt Prairie—from its sweeping horizons and delicate wildflowers to the shifting light, movement of the grasslands, and resilience of the land itself.
In preparation for the exhibition, the Josephy Center hosted a field trip to Zumwalt Prairie on June 13, inviting artists and community members to experience the landscape firsthand and gather inspiration for their work. Jeff Fields, Zumwalt Project Manager for The Nature Conservancy, joined the group on the prairie to share his knowledge of the landscape, its ecology, and ongoing conservation efforts. The day provided an opportunity to observe the prairie’s unique ecology, wildflowers, wildlife, and expansive vistas that continue to inspire artists and conservationists alike.Wild Landscape – Zumwalt Revisited is part of the Josephy Center’s annual exhibition series honoring Wallowa County’s remarkable natural areas. This year’s exhibit invites regional artists to reflect on the Zumwalt Prairie’s unique ecology, history, and sense of place through their creative practice.
The exhibition will be on display at the Josephy Center from July 31 through September 12, 2026.
