Maine Animal Stories #2- Loons on Lake St. George

I've had the pleasure of being invited upta camp by friends and family a handful of times since moving to Maine, and let me say it is HANDS DOWN my favorite camping experience ever. There's nothing like pulling up to a little cabin that's practically falling into the lake and full up with friends ready for a long weekend of swimming and campfires and shooting the sh*t. What a relief after being cooped up all winter!

Lucky for me, most Mainers equip their camp with at least a twin set of kayaks for getting out on the water, since I almost never have any other opportunities to try and develop my lackluster boating skills. One of my favorite camp memories is being out in a kayak on Lake Saint George. I let myself drift in the direction of a family of loons, and before I knew it my vessel was surrounded! The be-speckled birds swimming, dipping, and diving: following me (and the current). They stayed nearby for several minutes giving me a memorable display and then moved on. I paddled back up to the docks to the cheers of my friends who'd been watching my adventure play out from shore.

Maine Animal Stories #1- Moose off Main St.

When I first moved to Maine at 18 years old, I was given a second chance at checking off an obscure bucket list item. In middle school I'd visited Alaska for under a week and kept my eyes peeled ambitiously hoping to catch a glimpse of a moose. Tourist trap memorabilia and moose crossing signs were the closest I got, but, as a full-time Maine resident, my chances had improved significantly.

It finally happened a few years later when, standing on the deck of my Belfast apartment, I heard hooves clomping down the street. I peaked around the corner of the building expecting to see a horse and buggy like I'd grown accustomed to in Unity and was surprised to see a big bull moose charging up High Street towards my apartment building. I watched in awe and growing panic, pressed against the glass door to the deck, knowing that this was the magical moment I'd waited for and praying to be ignored by the magnificent monstrosity. He clamored up the street and through the neighbors yard in front of me and was gone. It was an extraordinary experience. I haven't seen another moose since, but if ever do I hope to be in the inside of the door.
