Megan's Girl Scout Gold Award Project at Elant

Megan's Girl Scout Gold Award Project at Elant My Gold Award Project is an outreach effort to show nursing home residents they are cared about. Only 50% of the elderly in nursing homes have any visitors.

When someone enters a nursing home they leave behind all that is familiar to them. Volunteers are needed to show our elderly they are cared about and not forgotten. My Gold Award Project has different components. If you could volunteer for one of them, you would be making a big difference in the lives of the elderly. When an elderly person must enter a nursing home for safety and health reasons, t

hey leave behind all that is familiar to them. Many residents suffer from loneliness and depression. Small acts of kindness mean so much to them. Volunteers are needed for the following: 1. Visit a resident-give just a half an hour of your time to visit a resident who is lonely and would love someone to talk to. 2. Use your talent to host an event for the residents. Residents will love anything you plan. Some ideas are-an ice cream social, sing a long, playing musical instruments, an afternoon tea, easy craft, table games and many others. 3. Make resident shoe boxes to donate. Fill shoeboxes with items residents can use. 4. Send residents cards and notes. If you can do any of these things, please contact me via this page or by e-mail [email protected]. The nursing home that I am working with is Elant at Meadow Hill, 172 Meadow Hill Road, Newburgh, New York 12550.

I want to thank everyone who supported me while I was working on my project. Tonight was my final interview with the Gold Award Committee and I was approved to receive the award. I am going to be a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts and there will be a Gold Award Ceremony on March 14, 2015. The project took 15 months to finish and there were times that I didn't know how I would get it done. I couldn't have finished it without help from many people. I especially want to thank Heidi Williams, my project advisor at Elant. She taught me a lot. If you can, please think about volunteering or visiting a resident in a nursing home. Thank you again.
