THE ENVELOPE ON MY PILLOW

The wind lifted my skirt for less than a second.

But the expression on my stepson’s face afterward made me realize the wind wasn’t the most disturbing thing happening in our driveway.

It was a quiet Saturday afternoon outside Charlotte, North Carolina.

The kind of neighborhood where people left bicycles on lawns, waved at passing cars, and worried more about football scores than what might be hiding inside their own homes.

I had just returned from Walmart, balancing a grocery bag against my hip while searching my purse for my keys.

My husband was inside watching football.

His son, Ethan, was supposed to be at work.

I thought I was alone.

Then I heard footsteps behind me.

Slow footsteps.

I turned halfway just as a powerful gust rushed between the houses.

The bottom of my skirt flew upward.

I gasped and grabbed the fabric with both hands.

Mortified, I spun around.

Ethan stood near the garage.

Only a few steps away.

He wasn't laughing.

He wasn't embarrassed.

He wasn't even looking away.

He simply stared at me with a faint smile that made my stomach tighten.

“Ethan?”

His expression didn't change.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

He stepped closer.

Not enough to openly threaten me.

Enough to make me step backward.

“You shouldn't dress like that around me,” he said quietly.

My fingers tightened around the grocery bag.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

A cold discomfort replaced my embarrassment.

“I’m your father’s wife.”

His smile disappeared.

“But you’re not my mother, are you?”

The words made every hair on my arms rise.

Inside the house, the television erupted with cheering.

My husband was only yards away.

Completely unaware.

I reached for the door.

Ethan spoke again.

“Does Dad know how people look at you?”

My hand froze on the k**b.

And suddenly, little moments from the past few months came rushing back.

Ethan lingering in the kitchen after everyone left.

Offering to carry laundry upstairs when I hadn't asked.

Knowing things about my schedule I had never told him.

Those strange smiles whenever his father walked out of the room.

That uncomfortable feeling of being watched.

I had dismissed all of it.

Maybe he was awkward.

Maybe I was imagining things.

Standing there, I couldn't believe that anymore.

“Why would you say something like that?” I whispered.

Ethan glanced toward the second floor.

Toward my bedroom window.

“The way I look at you when Dad isn't around.”

My heart started pounding.

I pulled open the front door.

“I think you need to leave me alone.”

Ethan stepped backward.

Then that strange smile returned.

I was about to call for my husband when he said:

“You should check what I left in your room.”

I slowly turned.

“What did you say?”

But Ethan was already walking toward the garage.

“Ethan!”

He disappeared inside.

I stood in the foyer, staring at the staircase.

Something was in my bedroom.

Something Ethan had placed there without permission.

My husband shouted happily from the living room as his team scored.

I didn't respond.

I started upstairs.

At the top, our bedroom door stood slightly open.

I knew I had closed it.

I pushed it wider.

Everything looked normal.

Until I saw the plain brown envelope sitting perfectly centered on my pillow.

My name was written across the front.

Beneath it were four words:

**“You were never alone.”**

My hands began to shake.

A photograph was sticking out from underneath.

I pulled it free.

And the moment I saw what was in the picture—

I screamed.
