**Before we get started with this post, please do not tell my mom I used her picture, and modified it a bit to make it more festive!**

My mom turned 87 years old today, so like any good son, I dropped by for a visit. Here is a brief excerpt from one discussion we had:

Me: "I am struggling a bit with which songs to consider for the first hour of my (Mostly) 80s Friday Happy Hour Live, heard only on Mixcloud. Do you have any suggestions?"

Mom: "First of all, it seems like you avoid bands like Ministry in the first half of most of your sets... why? Since you asked, I would suggest some of the old standards from R.E.M., The Bangles and perhaps some Thomas Dolby that you have not run into the ground."

Me: "Okay, wow, you have some very specific thoughts about how the show should start!"

Mom: "Well, yes - And also, since you asked, I would work some Allman Brothers in early, as well as a couple of old Country standards, the ones I have listened to for 50+ years."

Me: "That might be a good thing - what else have you got?"

Mom: "I would also go with a couple of other songs that are about 124 BPM, which would give you a good follow to that Ministry song we talked about earlier... perhaps some Red Flag, Secession or something similar?"

Mom continued: "Also, I keep hearing that one Northern Pikes song that you used to always play on your old Radionomy station in my head, go with that too. And them pull up some XTC that you have not played in a couple of years"

Me: "Okay!"

Mom: "Lastly, include another of your silly AI theme songs, perhaps make this pay a slight homage to one of my favorite artists who left us this week."

Folks - That is my mom - Always there for me when I need her the most!

I hope to see you all at 3:46 PM ET!

Happy Friday!

What would you say if I told you that it was likely that later today you would hear Toni Basil, Led Zeppelin, Metric, The Sisters of Mercy, X, Kraftwerk, ZZ Top, New Order, Groove Armada, Howard Jones, and more, all in the first hour of show #289?

Either you would say "WTF?," or you would say "Yes, please!"

I am hoping most of you will say the latter and join me on Mixcloud at 3:48 PM ET to see how things go!

There will be a Mixcloud show today!

It has been another very busy week for me, and as has often been the case lately, I have not had time to craft a proper promotional piece for my weekly (Mostly) 80s Friday Happy Hour Live livestream.

In order to get a compelling post to promote this week's 287th episode, I have asked my friend Blake, from the movie adaptation of Glengarry Glen Ross, to provide proper motivation, here is his effort...

"LISTEN UP.

You think this is a hobby? You think you can just drift through Friday afternoon with your namby-pamby soft-rock playlist and your participation trophies?

Wrong.

Every week that Generic Male DJ guy goes live with the only music that still has teeth left in its head: 80s alternative rock.

The real stuff. The stuff that didn’t ask for your permission. The Cure. The Smiths. Joy Division. Siouxsie. Echo & the Bunnymen. New Order. The ones who knew the difference between a closer and a deadbeat.

This isn’t background noise for your sad little deathscrolling. This is the soundtrack for people who still know how to get the job done.

You’re either in the room when the preshow hits at 3:45 PM ET… or you’re the guy who’s still “thinking about it” while the real ones are already ten songs deep and feeling something.

Coffee is for closers.
This stream is for people who show up.

Be there.
On Mixcloud.
On time.

Or go home and listen to whatever weak sh** the algorithm is feeding the rest of the pathetic herd.

See you on the livestream.
Don’t be late."

Here is a product all of the GMDJs gang will certainly (unofficially, of course) endorse!

Radford University Athletics and Kindred Spirit Brewing have partnered to create Exit 109 Lager, described as a 5.5% ABV, classic low carb American light lager which is super crisp and refreshing.

There will be a special launch party on Sunday, August 16th at 1:30 PM ET, for more info on that and to sign up if you are in the Richmond area, please visit https://engage.ext.radford.edu/e/exit-109-beer-launch/

‐---‐---------‐----------

It would be great to have a few of these Exit 109 Lagers later today (July 31,2026), as I embark on the musical journey that is episode 286 of my (Mostly) 80s Friday Happy Hour Live, heard only on Mixcloud.

I would love to see you all there, I have what I believe will be another enjoyable and tuneful session planned.

Join me, jump into the chat, and get this fine Summer weekend started in true Radford University fashion! See you all soon - www.mixcloud.com/live/genericmaledjs

Before Mixcloud, we had a streaming radio station on Radionomy. What a mess that was, with its arbitrary rules about ad inserts, mediocre sound quality, labor intensive programming tasks, clunky interface, etc.

It was a huge effort to keep a station running 24/7/365, given the limitations and primitive tools.

What Radionomy did give me was my first worldwide and online audience, a few of you reading this post may have been a part of that!

I was always thankful for those folks that put up with all of the limitations, and listened regularly to that little 128kps stream.

Mixcloud is a bit like the more sophisticated, yet at times flawed grandson of Radionomy, but I love it too, in spite of the imperfections and occasional annoyances.

I am happy to be on Mixcloud, (Mostly) every week, and very thankful that you all are as well!

Having said all of that, please join me for today's show, #285 for those keeping track, with the preshow activity starting at 3:49 PM ET.

I have what I believe will be an interesting show planned today, with the possibility of a bit of overtime if I am up to it! See you all soon!

Just for fun, I have asked the most important driver in modern business (AI) to radically retool this normal promo for my weekly (Mostly) 80s Friday Happy Hour Live stream on Mixcloud to aggressively appeal to the younger generations, this is what I got:

"This Friday afternoon at 3:44 PM ET, your boy’s droppin’ the ultimate 80s alternative rock livestream that’s straight-up all that and a bag of chips!

We’re talkin’ Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, Echo & the Bunnymen, and many other rad bands that still hit harder than a Tyson blow.

No cap, this stream is gonna be lit AF, turnt to the max, and totally on fleek with that sweet synth and jangly guitar goodness. YOLO, so don’t be a noob and ghost us like it’s 2009 MySpace drama — grab your bae, tell your squad to stop adulting for one night, and get pwned by the nostalgia!

Haters gonna hate, but this show’s FTW and will have you ROFL and LMAO while singing along. Don’t get hit with major FOMO later, fam — we'll go ahead and drop that link here - www.mixcloud.com/live/genericmaledjs

W00t! See you in the chat, or talk to the hand.

Peace out, stay swag, and keep it real, y’all!"

God help us all. See you soon.
