The Vienna Arts Society 2019 Bench Project caught the attention of Vienna's Matteo and Brandon Lambert as they discovered the dozens of benches around town. They decided to provide a bench to the Inova Schar Cancer Institute to bring smiles to kids with cancer, and last fall they raised funds through their non-profit Off The Charts.
Members of the Vienna Arts Society were invited to submit designs to the art selection committee at Inova Schar. Doré Skidmore's "To Fly" was chosen, featuring dragonflies, which symbolize new beginnings in cultures around the world.
Dozens of dragonflies flit across the bench, and a frog and a turtle float on the bench's seat. The back of the bench features birds found near Virginia waterways where dragonflies are abundant. If you look closely you'll find a cicada, celebrating their emergence as the bench was completed.
The bench can be seen at the Vienna Art Center in the Windover Building, 243 Church Street, NW, Suite 100 Lower Level, Vienna 22180. It will remain there until it's permanently installed in the Courtyard of the Inova Schar Cancer Institute. You'll find updates on the website

The Town of Vienna, VA - Government acquired these adorable doghouses to show what cottage housing in Vienna would look like [as a model presentation] 🏠— but they opened it up so groups could decorate them & they would be auctioned off [all proceeds will go for improvements in the dog park]. 🐶🐾
One Neighborhood Foundation signed up for one & Vienna VA Foodies signed up for one— and it was a huge team effort from many kind Vienna citizens. 💞💗
For ••both•• of the houses, I called up a ‘lifeline’ [literally] who I knew was good with power tools, Firefighter Kristopher Keyser. 👨🏻🚒 He instantly built the houses & then added an extension on one of them. I realized after that the day he did this— it was National Firefighter Day. Thank you Kris! Even when you’re not serving as a Hero, you still help. ❤️
For the ONF one, local Vienna artist Shari MacFarlane [& member of the Vienna Arts Society] volunteered over 30+ hours to paint the house with the most adorable designs.
Yes... over 30 hours! 😯😲😅😅😅
This house was the total vision/creation of artist Shari who is one of the most incredible ladies, full of talent & pizzazz.
I loved sitting with her each day, and hearing her stories.
There was SO much love put into her home.
Every thing she painted has a story behind it.
She topped the house with a signature crow— which Shari always has [at least] one placed on her mailbox. 🐦
Crows represent joy for her ❤️
For the Vienna Foodies one, Firefighter Kris had added the extension and I knew what I wanted it to be: Vienna Inn. He placed primer on the house, and I did the first coats of paint.
Then the next day, Andrea Hager joined & helped paint all the brick work.
And Christina Nguyen of Handmade with Love came did the all the lettering & flowers.
Andrea came back to do final touches. 🙂
I learned so much in this process, and had such a nice time unplugging from the internet and just.... painting.
Then the doghouses got placed at the town green with many other completed houses by Vienna groups.
The reactions from people (& dogs!) have been priceless— so beautiful.
Here are some photos from the very beginning— to now, when people are heading to the Town Green to enjoy.
It really was a therapeutic, community building project that I loved being a part of.
Thank you also dear friend Sarah Mueller for donating some of your paint that I used for the Vienna Inn house 🙂
Thank you Joni Seidenstein who made a custom-made pillow for the ONF doghouse decorated by Shari! 💞

And to visit them—-
Head to the Vienna Town Green!
One of the days Shari was sitting outside, a mockingbird flew on top of the doghouse.
It made me tear up and think of one of my fav quotes from To Kill a Mockingbird:
“Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.”
With the Vienna Business Association and Vienna Arts Society at the opening of the Vienna Open Air Spring Market. This and the Walk on The Hill made for a very nice day! What a great community we have!
