Quilter's Bay Long-Arm Quilting Services

01/12/2024

thanks to some friends keeping my interest in long arming going, I spent some time in the sewing room (Quilter's Bay) tonight. Figures when I have just a sample piece running, the machine seems to run without error. Looking forward to my mentor Bev coming on 26th so I can start my first real custom quilt job after her visit. In the meantime, I have a queen size quilt to fix some threadbreaks on; and a few baby/lap quilts to do! Any of course, I have about 10 quilts of my own partially started. Certainly missing my quilting assistant (my Mom) but May will be here before we know it.

I am working on a custom quilt design for one of my projects that I’ve recently been making progress on. I practiced the design on the orange fabric tonight. It’s hard to see in the photo but it turned out so nice that I’m going to make it into a pillow. The actual quilt is the taupe-ish colored block.

Going to consider today a successful day. I quilted one of Linda’s and got through it with no thread breaks, good tension and I only saw one skipped stitch. Must admit I did a short happy dance, lol. I forget to take a completed picture though, so more to come tomorrow

What I hoped would be a quick project turned into a pretty long day. On my first 3 passes, I struggled with skipped stitches, like on the last 2 projects. My friend advised me to change the foot back to what I was using before I switched it yesterday. There are so many variables to consider. Feeling defeated for a while, I took a nap and wrapped up the last 3 rows with no skipping!

Activity yesterday and today… bear paws for Amanda’s quilt and bubbles for Linda’s quilt. I wish I could say they were uneventful but now I am getting skipping stitches. 😔🤦‍♀️

I believe I fixed the problem from last night but decided to take a break until my friend and mentor comes next Friday to coach me. So, I’ll be working on finishing some quilt tops and hope to bombard with you photos starting next weekend. 😊

Was hoping for a quicker turn tonight but another learning experience presented itself. Intermittent stitching problems when reviewing the back. Trying slowing the machine down, changing needle, rethreading machine, new bobbin, oiling the bobbin area and making sure no lint. Will test all these changes tomorrow.

Good night friends. Every quilt has brought a new insight, and opportunity to learn. The quilt today came out beautiful except needs a 1” reinforcement stitch. But I learned to check the back on the roller before removing the quilt from the frame.

Finished a small quilt for my first customer, and today, my cousin stopped by and we completed a donation quilt for Project Linus. These two ladies have given me many more opportunities to fine tune my skills. For instance, after completing the donation quilt, my mentor explained to me that my tension was a little too tight.

Some guidelines if you are thinking of having long arming done. You need extra material for pinning the backing to the leaders and to attach clamps to the sides. I would recommended at least 4.5”, if not more (add 9” to width and length). There are other things to consider as well, and I’m still learning, but don’t hesitate to reach out. Things like ironing as well.

Thanks again for following me on my journey.

today was a good day! finished my Christmas quilt. I had to do some research on Gammill training videos, but learned how to relocate the pattern ! Also played with some samples, and I received my first set of quilts to work on. Got the first one on the frame tonight after added some scrap borders. Quilts on long arms need their backings bigger than the tops so today, Basted it on the frame with just about 1" clearance all around. Started to quilt it tonight and its' looking good. Will try to post pics tomorrow

A few challenges starting back up on this quilt. I must have confused the computer regarding my reference points when I rolled the quilt. It started stitching over the previous pass. Then because the reference point was too high, I got another error message as the machine bumped up against the pick up bar. So I am now removing the stitching from a 10” x 15” (approx) section and then need to figure out how to reposition everything! All in all I’m glad this happened now so I can learn from it before taking on customers.

Hello Everyone! I got my first real quilt on the machine tonight. Here is just the start of it, I got about 1/2 way done. The biggest challenge was when I ran out of bobbin thread. The pattern I chose has really dense quilting and it is using a lot of thread. I stopped midway because of the time and the need to wind more bobbins. I'll show completed pictures in the next day or two. When the bobbin thread ran out, I didn't know how to reset the stitching properly so in one case, stitches are missing and in the other case, the pattern was stitched twice. All in all, I'm really happy with my progress. I am hoping I'll figure out how to go back and fix the missing stitches. I have a friend that is going to trust me with a few quilts here soon, so, the fun is just beginning!! Thanks for following my journey.

I expanded my America theme with the eagle by adding letters filled with different patterns, used the text feature and modified the flag by removing some unneeded detail and rotated it. Having a blast!
