My past few weeks worth of work in the studio šŸ’•

141 test tiles made with fabric pressed into porcelain. January has been stage 1 of my testing phase focused on tile production, with February centered around pattern/color selection.

The test tiles came out of the kiln this morning. I couldn’t wait to test colors, using diluted acrylic ink to provide a matte finish to help jump form from ceramics to textile.

I’ll be selecting 6 fabric types out of the 9 total tested, and using all 5 colors reflected in the last photos as the color scheme for the final project.

Placement and arrangement to be determined.

Today, January 6th, 2022 marks exactly 9 months until the opening of my solo exhibition. The focal point of my show will be an installation piece titled ā€˜Memorial’. This piece will stand as a memorial in honor of my beautiful mother, Donna Russell Spivey.

ā€˜Memorial’ will stand as a deconstructed porcelain quilt measuring 7x7 feet. The quilt will be constructed using 441 individual tiles created from porcelain incorporated with my mother’s ashes as an additive. Each tile will be textured using various fabrics, some sentimental, and some simply reflective of the lattice and patchwork style quilts she was known for creating.

January 6th, 2022 It all started with fabric. I was, and remain fascinated by the concept of using clay (first stoneware, now porcelain) to create sculptural works that mimic fabric. If done well, each piece should take on the form of fabric in shape, style, and texture.

I was honored and thrilled to participate in a guest lecture earlier this week at Utica College with Dr. Steven M. Specht, Distinguished Professor of Psychology, during his Creativity Senior Seminar.

I haven’t given a lecture since the before times, in March of 2020 during my ICON days when I would host a monthly lecture series for the scientists in my lab. I had forgotten how much I love talking with and sharing my knowledge with fellow learners.

We discussed the creative process, emotive object witness, my personal artistic inspirations, and issues of elitism in both the arts and academia and it’s impact on accessibility.

I firmly believe that art should be accessible to everyone. It is an area that invites reflection, contemplation, questioning, and conversation surrounding experiences and struggles that we collectively experience, or can learn and evolve from, as humans of this earth.

Art can ignite a spark for evolution, and empathetic growth. I’m incredibly thankful to have had this opportunity as a reminder. ā¤ļø

This piece is one of my absolute favorite pieces, from my first semester of community ceramics at Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute in 2020.

It was an experiment using the patchwork technique with a glaze called Malcolm Davis Shino. The glaze is a carbon trap shino meaning that during the firing, carbon is trapped underneath the surface and provides the grey or charcoal finish in certain areas. Those elements can be brought out more or less with variable thickness coating or firing temperatures.

I love the inadvertent triangle, created due to the size of the glaze bin and having to rotate the piece to dip coat each 1/3 of the overall form until fully glazed. The variable definition, color differentiation, and texture of the final work is incredibly beautiful and completely unplanned.

Who doesn't love a happy accident.

Happy learning friends!
