Cirque du Cambodia

Cirque du Cambodia A documentary film about two Cambodians teenagers from a rural village with an incredible dream.

This documentary film tells the story about a very special arts school in Cambodia with an amazing "social circus" program that trains at-risk youths to become circus performing stars. Two of the schools most outstanding students - Sopha and Dina - were so good that they were accepted into the National Circus School of Montreal - one of the world's elite circus schools - across the street from the

world headquarters of Cirque du Soleil, where Sopha and Dina dream of performing someday. This film follows Sopha and Dina over six years on their quest to become the first Cambodians to perform with Cirque du Soleil!

We are thrilled that the Ottawa Festival du Cirque will screen our film on May 23. If you know anyone in Ottawa, you don't want to miss the chance to see our award-winning documentary, with a perfect circus-loving crowd cheering and whooping it up from the seats.

Much of the film takes place in Canada, so this is a perfect venue for a great screening. Some of the people in the film are likely at this festival!

Although it's not the same, of course, you can also always watch it at home, here: https://linktr.ee/cirqueducambodia

Five years ago, Cirque du Cambodia won the Jury Prize at the inaugural Circus International Film Festival (CIFF) — and it meant the world to us. The film was finished right at the height of the pandemic, with festivals in flux everywhere, so CIFF was one of the first real opportunities for audiences to see it. After a decade of making it, that recognition from the circus community felt incredible. We thought the film came out great, but we were clearly biased.

This year's CIFF is now underway, and if you want to check out the latest crop of circus films, head over to their page! And in a lovely twist — Cirque du Cambodia director Joel Gershon is now one of the jurors for this year's festival. Full circle! 🎪

Seasons greetings and happy holidays from Cirque du Cambodia, and we have great news ... in 2024, WE GOT INTO COLLEGE!
(College libraries, that is)

That's right, after the film was shown at the annual conference of the Association for Asian Studies, it spurred a host of orders from college libraries wishing to procure the film for their collections! The film is now permanently available at the libraries of University of Pennsylvania, University of Texas, University of Hawaii, Indiana University, Rice University, American University, James Madison University, University of Wisconsin and more.

The academic circuit continues with a mini-midwest college tour in a few months on April 1-3, 2025, as the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), Illinois State University and Heartland Community College have invited filmmaker Joel Gershon to speak at several on-campus screenings of the film. If you have a connection to the academic world, we would love to have the film procured in more university libraries and to set up more campus screenings.

If you’ve already seen the film, we hope you’ll recommend it to others and perhaps watch it again this holiday season! Here's the link for the streaming options, including Amazon Prime and a free (with ads) option on Tubi: https://linktr.ee/cirqueducambodia

Otherwise, we hope you flip into the new year with grace and style!!

Best to you,

Joel Gershon
