Marking the first freestanding floral metal sculptures in Saif Azzuz’s practice, these works expand on his ongoing exploration of industrial materials through molded form. Here, he turns to steel to create depictions of flowers, holding a tension between the material’s rough physical expression and the softness and beauty of what the works represent.
Azzuz repurposes materials with intention and care, drawing on the imagery, craftsmanship, and landscapes of his heritage, and reflecting Indigenous ways of making do with what remains. The sculptures evoke both the debris of colonization and the resilience of Indigenous life.
These works are presented as part of Azzuz’s solo exhibition at the gallery, “Aiy-ye-kwee”, on view now.
