Pivot Pottery just got an awesome upgrade with a new and improved glaze combo tile wall! Months in the making by Sam and Avery! Big shout out to Sam Myer Staas for taking on this project and executing it so well. From extruding test tiles, to organizing the grid, planning space for expanding glazes in the future and hammering in the first nail…I am so proud to have this wall up for our studio members and students. Also, here at Pivot, when something wears out or breaks, I just feel grateful that it’s a learning opportunity to teach my apprentice how to fix something! 💪 🧰 🔨 Avery is a quick study and she’s going to learn how to change kiln elements this week too. 💥⚡️BIG THANKS to Sam and Avery for helping me run this wonderful studio and keeping things going while I’m away.

Beginner and Beyond class is a mixed level class that keeps the focus on bowls, plates and cups. Students often repeat this class a few times and there are always some absolute beginners in the mix too. Here’s some student work as we wrap up the summer session and head into September.🍁 🍂 Cheers to trying new things!!

Grateful to have spent two days with this wonderful group of students to explore thrown and altered techniques on and off the wheel to make oval, square, triangular or organic shaped pots! The possibilities are truly endless. I loved sharing my love of clay with you all! Thank you so much for spending the weekend with me! We have some next level weekend workshops in the queue for 2027! Students learned how to make bottomless pots on the wheel to alter and attach to slabs, throw the gallery for lidded jars, fit odd shaped lids, tap on center 🌀🤗 and trim odd shaped pots. We also worked on handles and k***s. Phew! We covered a lot! Final pic is some of the thrown and altered pots that inspired our projects.

The hardest thing I do is teach beginners how to work on the wheel for the first time. Teaching *adults* how to be a beginner at something (again) is not easy. Getting them over the first few wonky bowls and helping them learn from their mistakes. Trying to explain how to be both strong and gentle at the same time, not just with their hands, but also with their minds. Adults can be so hard on ourselves. I have been practicing my craft for 35 years now, and teaching for 28 years. And still, I’m trying to be a better teacher each session. Swipe for beginner bowls on the first week of class! We did it!

Thrown & Altered weekend workshop: August 15 & 16
This is my favorite workshop to teach! Play with altering wheel thrown pots at different stages to create oval or squared forms. We will combine wheel thrown elements with slabs to make vessels, functional serving pieces, and lidded jars. Basic wheel throwing and hand-building skills helpful, but this is a great workshop for working with students at different levels of experience. More skilled students can play with larger forms and further explore lidded jars and casseroles. Handles, surface decoration and composition will also be explored. Students will work with stoneware (cone 6-10) and should bring packing materials to take home their greenware pieces. Maximum 9 students. $295
Please contact Tiffany to register.
