Billy, Captain of The Apparition II

He’s a Maine Lobster Boat Racing Hall of Famer, but he’s a lobsterman first. Billy began working on the water when was 12 years old. His first job was with Marine Services, now the home of the Tugboat Inn. He delivered the Coastal Courier to the summertime yacht owners. He began lobstering a year later. “I remember when fishing was king.This used to be a fishing town first, tourist destination second. It’s all upside down now. Sad. I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Local fisherman claim that Boothbay Region lobstermen are the oldest in the state with an average age of 57-58 years. Billy and other captains in Zone E cite many challenges facing their livelihood. Those challenges are more daunting for future generations considering a career in commercial fishing :
Environmental regulations; acute labor shortage (sternmen); restrictive fishing license exit ratios; shoreline development zoning battles; the opioid crisis, an aging population, affordable housing; the increasing income disparity in the region; the exodus of younger working class families; and the future health of marine resources (bait shortages, rising temperatures, etc.)
