Marian Garcia International Piano Competition and Festival 2021 – October 28-31, 2021

We welcome you to the 2021 Marian Garcia International Piano Competition and Festival, October 28-31! As always, this year's festival takes place at the Penn State School of Music, and will include competitions and masterclasses for collegiate and high school pianists.

There will also be recitals featuring guest artist Dr. Cathal Breslin (Associate Professor of Piano, Arizona State University) and Dr. Melody Quah (Assistant Professor of Music, Penn State University). Dr. Breslin will present a collegiate masterclass on Friday, October 29, and Penn State faculty will present a masterclass for high school students on Saturday, October 30.

Applications for Collegiate and Pre-Collegiate piano competitions are due on October 15th, and do not require a pre-screening. The first 20 completed applications received will be entered in the competitions! Pre-screening videos are required to participate in the high school masterclasses only.

Welcome Dr. Quah!

Quah Appointed Assistant Professor of Music starting August 2020

State College, PA [March 27, 2020] — Acclaimed pianist Dr. Melody Quah will join the Penn State School of Music as assistant professor of music beginning in August 2020. She will teach graduate and undergraduate piano students, including piano literature courses, and will contribute to the vibrant musical culture at Penn State. Described as a "poet with titanium fingers" by the Vancouver Sun, Quah has performed extensively on the stages of her native Malaysia as well as across Asia, Europe and North America.

Quah says, “I am thrilled to join the esteemed School of Music faculty at Penn State. The University’s impressive resources and commitment to student success align with my top priority as an educator, which is to prepare graduates to thrive in the 21st-century musical landscape and transition successfully from students to engaged artist-citizens.”

Marian Garcia International Piano Competition and Festival 2018 | The Penn State School of Music

We welcome you to the 2019 Marian Garcia International Piano Competition and Festival, November 7-10, 2019! As always, this year's festival takes place at the Penn State School of Music. We will feature two guest artists this year, Marina Lomazov and Joseph Rackers, who will present masterclasses and a duo recital the evening precending the collegiate competition. Penn State faculty will also present masterclasses throughout the weekend.

Applications for Collegiate and Pre-Collegiate piano competitions are due on October 14th, but do not require a pre-screening. The first 20 completed applications received will be entered in the competitions!

This year's festival is the first to be hosted in the Penn State School of Music's new recital hall, together with with two new Hamburg Steinway pianos. We are very excited about this year's events and hope you will be able to attend.

Our Story

Welcome to Penn State's Marian Garcia Piano Competition and Teacher Workshop! This year's event includes two piano competitions (one for collegiate students and one for high school students), piano teacher workshops, recitals, and masterclasses presented by Penn State piano faculty members Christopher Guzman, Kristin Stephenson, and Timothy Shafer. We are delighted that you are considering attending and participating. Over $2500 in cash prizes (and additional scholarships for high school seniors!). The high school division competition is open to students currently in grades 9-12 and currently residing or studying in the United States. The collegiate division is open to piano students currently pursuing a music degree at any level (undergrad, M.M., or D.M.A.), who are enrolled and currently residing or studying in the United States.
