In case you missed it, registration for the 2023 Fore the Blue Band Golf Tournament is now underway! We're hopeful that so many of you will join us again this year on the course supporting the sustainment of the Blue Band.

The Committee has been hard at work preparing for this year's tournament. We're looking to bring back the chance to win a new car with the Hole-In-One contest sponsored by Ciocca. There's also a chance that we'll be joined by a member of the Penn State football team!

If you are unable to attend this year, please consider becoming a Pin Flag Sponsor. This donation has a significant impact on the funds we raise for the tournament. Plus, you're able to customize your Pin Flag message that will be mailed to you to keep!

We'll have reminder emails in the coming weeks but don't wait ... register today! You can find links to both the Golf Registration and Pin Flag Sponsorship at the following:

https://www.psualumnibands.org/

See you on June 24!

Today THON will be holding a matching day as a part of its annual Dream Forward Campaign. Starting at 8am today, every 3rd donation up to $100 will be matched one to one until funds run out. This is a great opportunity for our alumni and other donors to maximize their donations! The THON community has aimed to raise $700,000 during this campaign. From October 24th to November 9th, students and supporters have had opportunities to engage in many campus activities in State College and beyond. The grand total for the campaign will be announced on November 9th, and we will also be celebrating 100 days til’ THON on that day!
We thank you for your continued support of THON and Band Together benefitting THON. As always, feel free to share the DonorDrive page. You may use this link to donate today for matching as well.

Today, we’re of our Alumni Band, Penn State Alumni Blue Band Association 🙌

In 1963, Blue Band alumni pitched the creation of an Alumni Blue Band to Director Dunlop. He loved the idea, and invited past Blue Band alumni to that year’s Homecoming to sit and play with current members.

It wasn’t until the next year that the band performed on the field during the Homecoming game, marking the birth of a tradition.

Our Alumni Band has been ~instrumental~ to our growth, and we can’t thank them enough for their continued support for the organization! 💙

Changes are coming to your Penn State Alumni Blue Band Association membership that will make it easier to connect with the entire global Penn State Alumni Association network of affiliate groups and take advantage of exclusive benefits and discounts!

Details were emailed out to ABBA contacts earlier this morning, but our core mission and programs aren't changing, including exclusive access to participate on the field at Penn State Homecoming for alumni of the Penn State Blue Band Official, as well as opportunities for the entire Penn State community to raise funds in support of the Athletic Bands program through our golf tournament and virtual 5K.

Penn State Alumni Association members will soon find it easier to engage with the University in their local communities, after a change to how they access local chapters takes effect later this year. From an article on Joe Paterno in the 11/9/11 GQ magazine. I was part of the combined Blue Band/Alumni Band that played that moving arrangement of Amazing Grace in tribute to the Virginia Tech souls lost and knew then that truly, truly, Penn State was special. https://www.gq.com/story/joe-paterno-coach-penn-state-ncaa-college-football?fbclid=IwAR2m3o7lMRne-1KXZxRxOcfpftB8NjuMPOcS2zScCosWaX-sE7kdZszRm3U

"Aw, you're going to have to talk to the sociologists or the psychologists," he says. He sits on his hands, on a large couch in the center of the room. "But I do think there's a certain amount of pride that can be generated in your student body if things are handled right." He rubs his chin, thinks, sighs as if revving up. "All right? Just like our Virginia Tech tribute. You know, we had 70,000 people last year at our spring game after the shootings, and 45,000 of them were wearing orange shirts for Virginia Tech. It was really moving. The band played 'Amazing Grace.' And you couldn't see a dry eye in the whole place. It was a football game that gave them the chance to show they were with the Virginia Tech people. Why it happens, how it happens—honest to God I don't know. I just know that it's something that's very, very difficult to explain. I run out of that tunnel, the crowd's there, and the whole—just a little something about it you can't quite... I don't know. If somebody asked me to take two weeks to describe it, I'd still have a tough time. It would sound so corny. Because it's just tough. It's tough."

Check out the Penn State Alumni Blue Band Association and Penn State Blue Band Official joining together to sing and play The Nittany Lion fight song during halftime Saturday.

It was especially meaningful to see last year's drum major, Keith Griffith, lead the Alumni Blue Band after missing out on last season because of COVID restrictions. Nice job, Keith!
What an incredible afternoon at the Alumni Center for our Penn State Homecoming Ice Cream Social!

We were so lucky to be joined by the Penn State Alumni Blue Band Association, the Nittany Lion, and members of our Penn State family. We'll see you this evening for the Homecoming Parade!

I'm writing to pass on a request from a photographer friend of mine who also is a faculty member in the College of Communications. John Beale is doing a photo project for the 20th anniversary of 9/11. He has some photos from Penn State and is trying to track down the people in them to see how their lives have changed 20 years later. He sent me a photo of a Blue Band member named Jennifer, which I have attached here. By any chance does anyone know her last name ... and might you know how to contact her? Thanks for any assistance anyone can provide.
The Penn Stater Magazine wants to hear your college road trip stories!

An away football game or a big-city weekend? A beach week of sun and sand or a midwinter trek to the ski slopes? Whatever the destination, we’re collecting stories of your most memorable college road trips for an upcoming feature in the Penn Stater. Whether it was just you and a bestie or a whole group of friends, a day trip or a week-long haul over spring or winter break, across Pennsylvania or across the country, we want to hear about it! Tell us about the memorable sights, the songs and snacks that kept you going, and the breakdowns, missed turns, and flat tires that almost derailed you along the way. You can send your stories (no more than 250 words, please) to [email protected]. We’ll compile as many as we can in an upcoming feature. Thanks!
