Congratulations to Amber Lucas!

Amber Lucas has been selected as a recipient of the John W. White Memorial Fellowship. This fellowship is awarded by the Penn State Senate Committee on Student Life to four-five Penn State students who are graduating with the highest academic distinction (Summa Cum Laude) and plan on enrolling in a graduate program. Amber is currently completing her Bachelor's of Music Education at The Pennsylvania State University. During her time at Penn State Amber was an active participant in The Penn State Blue Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Philharmonic Orchestra, and Clarinet Choir. After graduation Amber plans on attending Michigan State University to pursue a Master of Music in Clarinet Performance.

At this year's Eastman Tuba Euphonium Academy at Oklahoma State University, we are absolutely thrilled to welcome Velvet Brown to our artist panel!

In addition to being Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Penn State, she is also Associate Director for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at the School of Music. She enjoys a career as an international soloist, chamber ensemble and orchestral performer, recording artist, conductor, and educator. Her work has taken her around the globe, sharing her talents with worldwide audiences.

Guest artists Ariana Wyatt and Rick Masters will have a recital this Sunday at 1:30 in the Recital Hall. We are thrilled to welcome them to Penn State!

Performer Bios:

Originally from Southern California, soprano Ariana Wyatt is now based in Virginia, and enjoys a diverse career on the opera stage and in the concert hall. On the stage, she has performed forGotham Chamber Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Santa Fe Opera, OperaOmaha, Spoleto USA, Opera Roanoke, Opera on the James, the Juilliard Opera Center andAspen Opera Theater. She has recorded for the Albany and MSR labels, with her 2020 recordingLet Evening Come: American Songs Old and New named one of the best classical recordings of2020 by the Chicago Tribune.

An avid concert artist, recent appearances include those with the Ameropa Festival in Prague,Czech Republic, the Parma Festival, the Red Rocks Music Festival, the Aspen Music Festival andSchool, the Musica Viva series, as well as appearances with Steve Blier as part of the New YorkFestival of Song. Her oratorio credits include Messiah with Charleston Symphony, Dvorak’sRequiem for the Prague Festival Orchestra, Vivaldi’s Gloria at Carnegie Hall, Haydn’s Creation and Mozart’s Requiem for Davidson College, the Brahms Requiem for the Bulgarian YouthOrchestra and the University of South Carolina, Bach’s St. John Passion for the Los AngelesBaroque Orchestra and a Holiday Pops concert with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. An enthusiastic advocate for contemporary art song and opera, she has premiered and championed chamber works by Alan Louis Smith, Daron Hagen, Gregory Hutter, Lori Laitmanand Robert Spillman.

Ms. Wyatt won first place in the Metropolitan Opera Competition Western Region in 2003. Shehas also been a finalist at the Charles A. Lynam Vocal Competition and a winner of the NewWest Symphony and Pasadena Opera competitions. She is a graduate of the Juilliard OperaCenter, the Santa Fe Apprentice Program for singers, the Glimmerglass Opera Young ArtistProgram, and the Florida Grand Opera Young Artist Program. Ms. Wyatt is a graduate of theUniversity of Southern California and the Juilliard School, and is currently an associate professor of voice at Virginia Tech.

Richard Masters is a soloist, opera coach, and conductor based in Blacksburg, VA, where he is an associate professor of piano and collaborative piano on the music faculty at Virginia Tech
School of Performing Arts. Significant collaborations include concerts with Grammy-winning baritone Donnie Ray Albert, flutist Valerie Coleman, mezzo-soprano Barbara Conrad, formerJuilliard String Quartet violinist Earl Carlyss, saxophonist Harvey Pittel, and under the baton o fLorin Maazel.

Recent performances include recitals at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, theSchola Cantorum in Paris, Gallery 345 in Toronto, the Richard M. Nixon Presidential Library, the Percy Grainger Home and Museum in White Plains, and the San Francisco Conservatory.

Solo and collaborative recordings are available on the Heritage and Albany Record labels,including a disc of solo piano music by Percy Grainger and his contemporaries, a recording ofAmerican art songs selected by Chicago Tribune critic Howard Reich as one of the "best classical recordings of 2020," and a CD of clarinet and piano works by Sergei Prokofiev and John Ireland.A forthcoming CD on the Heritage label with clarinetist Yevgeny Dokshansky explores clarinet and piano transcriptions of music by Ernest Bloch.

Dr. Masters is a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder (B.M.), the Juilliard School(M.M.), and the Eastman School of Music (D.M.A.).
