Do you ever just take an early morning walk around your county?

There are always little treasures to find, even in the place you’ve called home your whole life.

Sometimes, it takes experiencing your hometown like a tourist to really appreciate the beauty that’s been there all along.

Sure, small towns have their downsides. Empty buildings, limited resources, and a lack of funding can be frustrating. But sometimes we need to remember what we *do* have.

We live in a place where you wave at everyone you pass. Where someone will stop on the side of the road to help when you have car trouble. Where, when a loved one passes away, neighbors rally around the family and show up with a casserole dish, a helping hand, or simply a shoulder to lean on.

Small-town life isn't perfect, but there are some pretty wonderful things about it. Sometimes, you just have to slow down and look around to remember that.

We have a lovely find to share with you today that was shared with the TCP!

This beautiful 1986 painting by Patricia Brantley features Hobb’s Grocery Store in Dakota, Georgia, a building that is still standing today (although you may not realize it due to the vegetation that has engulfed it)! Click the link below to read to see the location.

Do you have memories of Hobb’s Grocery Store or know anything about its history? We’d love to hear from you! Share your memories, stories, or information in the comments so we can add to and update our archive record.

Turner County lost one of its great historians on Sunday.

David Baldwin had a deep and abiding love for Turner County, the families who called it home, and the stories that made this community what it is. He spent untold hours researching, writing, collecting and sharing the history of the place he loved.

Here at the Turner County Project, we owe David a tremendous debt of gratitude. So much of what we are able to do today is possible because of the historical preservation work he did long before this project existed.

David passed his microfilm reader and his collection on to us, and we don't take that responsibility lightly. We hope to continue the work he began: finding the stories, preserving them, and making sure the people and places of Turner County are not forgotten.

David, we salute you.

Thank you for loving Turner County enough to spend a lifetime remembering it.

Your work will continue.
Your stories will continue.
And, thanks to you, Turner County's history will continue to be told
