Okay, while staring at my computer, trying to come up with something to do, it hit me. Maybe I should finally break out a rebuild I started on my Horatio Class Cruiser.
Now, for those who like lore, the Horatio Class is meant to be a big leap forward in deep-space exploration vessel design in my little alternate universe. Starfleet R&D are so confident in the design the first two ships start construction simultaneously. Hull number 955, "Horatio", and hull number 956, "Eagle." Construction begins in 2227 and is slated to take 4 years.
Captain John Stanton, my main character, is placed in charge of Eagle's construction. He and his lead engineer immediately notice several issues with the design. There are several structural deficiencies in the Spaceframe, and the EPS grid is a mess. Stanton requests permission to fix the issues before construction goes too far, but is shot down. Not one to follow the rules, he decides to fix them anyway.
Launch day rolls around. Both Horatio and Eagle are set to launch within minutes of each other. Horatio never fully departs her construction gantry. Once her systems are put under load, she just craps out. Eagle, on the other hand, departs and begins her first warp tests without incident. Three months later Eagle will finish her trials and be accepted into service wearing the hull number NCC-956. Horatio will be towed out of her berth to a nearby salvage yard. The issues with the EPS systems deemed far to costly to repair.
U.S.S. Eagle would go on several long-term exploration missions with Captain Stanton in the center seat. In 2242 she would return home to undergo a moderate refit. Not long after, she would serve with distinction during the Four Years War against the Klingon Empire. Both ship and captain earn an impressive reputation within the Empire. At war's end, Starfleet is faced with a choice. Scrap her, refit her as-is, or convert her into a new Constitution Class starship. A design she helped inspire. The choice is obvious.
So, my idea, since I have a new Constitution, is to adapt the original to fill in the role of the Horatio Class. I'm making some changes, for sure. Shorter Engineering hull. Smaller nacelles. She'll also be more detailed than the OG with maybe a bit more of an NX flair. Below is a mess of renders I've done so far. The very last one is my previous Horatio model. I was chasing the Disco/SNW Connie feel at the time. Okay, my fingies hurt... Too much typing. lol
