We have been slacking on posting our work because you have to actually think about it and take photos…and we are creative types, aka not always good at remembering to do that!

Now we are working on a real creature, a Honduran white bat. Hypnothermia is fascinated with these cute little buggers that nest in the folds of large tropical leaves. I too find them amazing.

From Bat Conservation International:

“Fun Fact: The Honduran white bat is the first mammalian species known to incorporate carotenoids (a class of red, orange and yellow pigments found in plants) in their skin. The bright yellow color of their wings, ears, and nose comes from a yellow carotenoid pigment called lutein, which is probably attained by the bat’s diet of peeled fig fruits.

Honduran white bats are found only in Central America, ranging from Honduras through parts of eastern Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and western Panama. Also sometimes called the Honduran White Tent-making Bat, these small, Leaf-nosed Bats roost in leaf ‘tents’. Using their teeth, the bats cut along the ribs of Heliconia leaves to create a folded tent-like structure. Colonies tend to be small, with bats roosting in groups of two to 15 individuals.

One of the two smallest Frugivorous Bat species in the world, Honduran white bats feast on figs, particularly one species of fig (Ficus Colombrine). Likely as a result of this specialization, Honduran white bats have relatively large home ranges compared to other larger, fruit-eating bat species. The bats also prefer to forage on trees that are close to their roosts and may spend all night eating at a tree.”

Honduran white bats are near threatened in the IUCN.

We made the posable wings with small wooden dowels and armature wire, and Hypnothermia picked out fabric to sew them into. We still need to add some yellow for those carotenoids!

Hypnothermia took this cool untouched photo of the moon that we just 3D printed by lighting it with her phone and holding it up with her hand.

It has an attachment for a light fixture, and it will hang over a bed. Turned out pretty realistic!

Hypnothermia is working on some new artwork, real creatures this time, red-crowned cranes.

The red-crowned crane (Grus japonensis), also known as the Manchurian crane, is a large, rare bird of East Asia. It’s considered the second rarest crane in the world, after the whooping cranes.

They have white bodies, black necks and tails and a red patch on their foreheads. They have a black band from their bill to their necks, and a white stripe behind their eyes that extends down their necks.

This is going to be a large poster when complete.

Antlers!

We 3D printed the white tailed deer antlers this morning. It took almost 2 hours but didn’t use nearly the amount of filament that we expected, even with the extensive supports required for these branched beauties.

So far we have a barn owl face, white tailed deer antlers, a maned wolf body and raptor wings…quite a creature indeed!

Creature armature is finally standing, yippee!

We had to order some smaller wire for wrapping in order to get those wings and those looooong legs to stay in place.

Attaching the owl head is next.

Our first completed art doll head on the 3D printer! We are super pleased!

Hypnothermia scrapped their first creature design and passed it on to me to do with as I choose, and I’m kind of excited about that! 😜 *evil laugh*

Here are some photos of the new creature head after firing and painting. 🐈‍⬛

I decided to take pics of our works in progress even if they aren’t pretty, however Hypnothermia doesn’t always agree because they are a perfectionist!

Agnes now has a “skeleton”, feet and a base, and Hypnothermia’s untitled-so-far creature has a cotton batting body (not pictured because perfectionist).
