In recent weeks green diamond resource company brought loggers and a slew of heavy machinery into the eastern hillside of the tsurai village, removing one treesit, cutting the tree and clear cutting the surrounding canopy. Leaving just a few select trees in and around a pile of devastated second growth redwood stand.

Green Diamond has the audacity to call themselves a “forest stewardship company,” but those who live in the village confront these lies on a regular basis. Cutting along the hillside further destabilizes the ground on which occupied tree sits stand, and destroyed the vibrant ecosystem that called that hillside home. Almost everyday treesiters would be visited by flying squirrels, voles, birds and owls. Now it's quiet there.

The forest stand where the tree village is located is the largest stand of old-second growth and residual old-growth redwoods in the Tsurai area outside of local parks. These remaining areas of high quality habitat represent a fraction of the former expanse of ancient redwoods that once stood on these slopes. Logging here led to two catastrophic forest fires in the mid 1900’s. The widespread clear cutting of this land continues to this day and is no less a threat to the well-being of the wildlife and people of this area.

Arborists also rendered an estimated 1000 feet of rope unusable. We need help rebuilding in whatever way people can give. If folks are able to come and treesit for 2 weeks or longer please email [email protected]. And Venmo to support the ongoing effort of keeping the remaining trees standing. Love, grief and solidarity 💚

PRESS RELEASE: HUNGER STRIKE AND BLOCKADE FOR THE REDWOODS IN HUMBOLDT

On Sunday night February 19th forest defenders set up a sky-pod blockade, occupied by a protester commencing a hunger strike (statement below). In January 2023 Humboldt Redwood Company (HRC) filed commencement to begin logging in Freshwater, California. The forest that is being logged contains massive Redwood and Douglas Fir trees that are providing critical habitat to many endangered animals in the area. HRC claims to log sustainably but there's no such thing on an industrial scale when profit margins are the only concern. Forest defenders are determined to stop this logging plan.

STATEMENT FROM FOREST DEFENDER "ARISTOTLE":

"As you're reading this I am suspended above an entrance to one of Humboldt Redwood Company's (HRC) industrial timber harvest plans, blocking this entrance by the support lines of the net that is holding me. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and these are desperate times indeed. On January 18th a forest defender named Tortuguita was murdered by state troopers while occupying the Weelaunee forest in Atlanta. They have since held activists with no bail or extremely high bail to prevent people from defending the forest. I am doing this to try and honor Tortuguita's life and wish for the land to be protected, and in solidarity with activists in Atlanta facing extreme police repression.

I will not leave nor eat until HRC commits in writing to abandon this Timber Harvest Plan indefinitely. The police may try to use this as justification to extract me for "health concerns". I am taking supplements which will allow me to subsist without food for months without endangering my health or safety. Any attempt to extract me is for the companies profit, not a concern for my well being.

This forest is filled with huge Redwoods and Douglas Fir trees which are becoming increasingly rare as private timber ravages the landscape. It is already too late for 97% of the worlds native forests. CONTINUED IN COMMENTS

We call on all people of good conscience to stand in solidarity with the movement to stop Cop City and defend the Weelaunee Forest in Atlanta.

On January 18, in the course of their latest militarized raid on the forest, police in Atlanta shot and killed a person. This is only the most recent of a series of violent police retaliations against the movement. The official narrative is that Cop City is necessary to make Atlanta “safe,” but this brutal killing reveals what they mean when they use that word.

Forests are the lungs of planet Earth. The destruction of forests affects all of us. So do the gentrification and police violence that the bulldozing of Weelaunee Forest would facilitate. What is happening in Atlanta is not a local issue.

Politicians who support Cop City have attempted to discredit forest defenders as “outside agitators.” This smear has a disgraceful history in the South, where authorities have used it against abolitionists, labor organizers, and the Civil Rights Movement, among others. The goal of those who spread this narrative is to discourage solidarity and isolate communities from each other while offering a pretext to bring in state and federal forces, who are the actual “outside agitators.” The consequence of that strategy is on full display in the tragedy of January 18.

Replacing a forest with a police training center will only create a more violently policed society, in which taxpayer resources enrich police and weapons companies rather than addressing social needs. Mass incarceration and police militarization have failed to bring down crime or improve conditions for poor and working-class communities

We received a communique from forest defenders:
Today more chainsaw toting PG&E contractors were sent packing by forest defenders, in a series of work shut downs within state parks in recent weeks that’s have had a stifling effect on PG&Es operation in the parks.

“Today we stopped what would have been a devastating removal of an iconic large redwood tree which was selected for removal because it has a cave,” said Rain, who has been patrolling every week since the beginning of Sept.

“When we arrived at the site the arborists had their gear ready and were looking at trees to be cut that day. We walked up and told them we were going to prevent them from working.”

In several other instances defenders patrolling the parks have occupied the “drop zone” space around trees that are targeted by PG&E for trimming, topping or removal. Safety standards do not allow for cutting with people in the drop zone. This has happened within Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Avenue of the Giants and Grizzly Creek State Park.

These stalwarts are continuing the largely successful struggle from last fall and winter against PG&Es “enhanced vegetation management”, aka EVM, in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. EVM came with permission from the state to cut many more trees along power lines than was formerly allowed. Some power line workers have insisted to the defenders that there will be no EVM operations in the state parks. The land defenders say they are committed to protecting this rare forest habitat and stopping all vegetation removal in the parks until PG&E promises to stop trying to remove large trees and shows evidence that they will not be engaging in EVM this year or next.

The defenders are seeking support, financially and on the ground. They also encourage others to defend trees from pge and can provide information on how to do it on both public and private land.

“We came we saw, you didn’t saw”

Forest defenders have been patrolling parks and byways on public lands in so-called humboldt county shutting down every tree cutting operation along PG&Es power lines that they encounter. They are seeking others who wish to do the same.

A year ago, sent a small army of tree fallers and arborists into . Rather then adapt their technology to the environment, the utility company received massive funding to clearcut a wide corridor through protected forest.

Hundreds of folks showed up to protect the trees, ✨every day for five months✨. Almost all of the late seral and old growth trees they had targeted are still standing!

Cutting was suspended over the spring and summer, but now it's likely that they'll return to the park within the next few weeks, and folks in the Mattole are mobilizing to resist another onslaught - they need folks willing to come and stand with the forest!

Follow .local707 for more info/updates

Email [email protected] to get involved - on the ground support is needed now and likely through the rest of the year.

With the days finally starting to feel a little longer and brighter, we've been having more time to share skills, welcome new folks here, and work on projects around the tree village. Swipe to see the ocean view from a treetop kitchen, and a wandering salamander(yes that's really what they're called😽😽😽) that's been a-wandering through the treesits lately.

If you contacted us, or were interested in coming out over the winter, now is a good time to get back in touch, especially if you are:
🌲able to come out for at least two weeks, or...
💚live nearby/are interested in coming back later, or...
🐸are looking to build skills to plug into land defense efforts anywhere!

👉Venmo to support the ongoing treesits! We're in need of both good condition climbing and camping gear, and donations for storage fees.👈
