Sharim v'Sharot

Sharim v'Sharot We are "People of Song", dedicated to the preservation, performance, and study of Jewish Music. We perform both Ashkenazic and Sephardic folk music.

We are Sharim v’Sharot (from Ecclesiastes 2:8, Hebrew for “People of Song”), a four-part a capella choir. We were founded in 2000 with the following mission:

To promote high-quality Jewish music
To educate the general public about Jewish music

We sing Jewish music of all eras, locations, and languages, including Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino, French, Italian, and English. Our repertoire spans

the Italian Renaissance of Salamone Rossi’s madrigals through nineteenth-century liturgical music of Germany, twenty-first-century Israeli and American classical works, show-tunes from the Yiddish theatre, and modern popular styles. Over the past decade, we’ve become known as the choir that tries the new, the avant-garde, the unusual. We’ve even done doo-wop and vocal percussion. As I like to say, we’re not just “Hava Nagila”. Although we perform largely throughout the State of New Jersey, we have traveled to New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. We have performed for synagogue celebrations, interfaith services, Jewish community events, Yiddish clubs, retirement homes, and choral festivals. Sponsored by Rider University’s Hillel, Sharim v’Sharot is an independent choir. We meet in Lawrenceville, New Jersey throughout the year. Our members are students and professionals of all ages living throughout Central New Jersey and the Greater Delaware Valley. (You don’t have to be Jewish to sing with us.) Come join us, learn about the variety of Jewish music throughout the centuries, and spread the word about Jewish music.

Sharim V’Sharot had an excellent 26th Spring Concert, conducted by Daniel Hyman! While the title was”Jewish Composers of Broadway”, we added songs in honor of the 250th Anniversary of America and a World Premiere of Caryn Alter’s “Eshet Chayil” . Composed by Caryn Alter, a Sharim V’Sharot singer, it was written in honor and memory of Wendy Held, a dear member of Beth El Synagogue, the gracious hosts of this concert!
