“Off to Gus O’Connor’s pub for the evening, which was full of appreciative listeners to the traditional music and the booths set aside for the musicians swelled to eight or ten people with instruments as the evening progressed. I sketched two women leaning against a post watching with rapt attention as well as Stephen from France with a flute, Angela on a pipe, and all the others crammed in, too many to draw.”

“Here, fine china is mixed with plain. Same for the silver that is polished but not so much as to have lost that beautiful grey tone patina. Fruits and vegetables gathered from their garden—unseen—fill various bowls, a huge hall centerpiece, long past fresh, stalwartly graces the entry cabinet.”

Flashback to 2002 in Anguilla:

“With Nature Boy and Adrian of Chocolat the 35’ sail catamaran we’ve taken from Sandy Ground to here. Snorkled in Little Bay. People are fishing from the rocks with just line. Saw a spotted ray, swarms of ‘fry’—what we call minnows.”

Sunday 23 April 2023
Ireland

“It was a leisurely morning of writing and drawing maps. Then we were off to explore Aughadown and Prohoness. A word about the spelling and pronunciation of Irish place names—sometimes on maps Aghadown has the letter u, as in Aughadown, and sometimes it doesn’t. When I asked a local about that, she laughed and said ‘Yes, and sometimes it’s pronounced with a soft guttural for the gh, Aghadown, but others pronounce it Affadown. Don’t even get me started on how to pronounce Prohoness,’ she said. I later looked up the meaning of the name Aghadown. In Irish, Achadh Duin, means ‘the field of the fort.’ As it turns out, my later exploration of the word Prohoness would lead me to the answer of a great mystery.”

“I think many people who live in the land of their people, who haven’t moved away from their homeland, wherever that is, can’t understand the deep longing of those of us who have been severed from our lineages and groundings.”

Monday 22 April 2019

“Our next stop was to visit Castledonovan. We wandered north through side roads of great beauty to the castle ruins. A lovely walk wound down past the castle car park. The relic of the castle perched on an outcrop not far from the River Ilen that forms the east side of the Aghadown Peninsula. Only the tower remains. The story is that Oliver Cromwell’s soldiers in the late 1640s severely damaged the castle to retaliate against the O’Donovans for joining the Royal Stuart Catholic side. It has been a relic since then.”

“It’s all simply too much to take in. History, lore, mythology and songs tell the stories everywhere in Ireland. Scratch the surface of a bit of information to uncover layers and layers of meaningful connections to people, plants and animals, the land, and to each other through time and place. My sisters and I looked south to the lower hill, the Rath-Laoghaire from whom we may be descended through the Quinlan line of our Irish heritage.

In a few moments more, I was going to walk on the Hill of Tara. During my studies I learned the hill had been the home or ceremonial center of at least a hundred and forty-seven earlykings, neither divine nor hereditary, but chosen, in the Irish system.”
