ā€œAs tired as we were last night, we sat up talking until late. Today weā€™re going to visit Hillsborough Castle here in County Down. The property has a long history, from Irish Chiefs to English royalty governors of Northern Ireland, to State house for the Secretary of State of England when London ended the rule of Governors and established direct rule. Itā€™s very confusing to us Americans, but it has been a long peace process that followed English domination, a devasting civil war, the creation of the Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland, and the ensuing thirty years of the Troubles. I was awestruck to be here on the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 that finally led to a fragile, but continuing peace. Iā€™m standing in the red room where it was signed following days and nights of tense negotiations between Sinn Fein (pronounced shin-fane) of the Republic of Ireland and the English government in Northern Ireland.ā€

ā€œUp and to breakfast by 9 a.m, all at our usual table for eight. Then by 9:30, off to Galion Bay to horseback ride at Bayside Riding Stables. What fun! The horses were as well-kept as anyā€”betterā€”than Iā€™ve ever seen. They were sweet and responsive which made the two who hadnā€™t ridden much more comfortableā€”Sam has ridden once, and Megan never.
We had lunch at the only restaurantā€”beachshack on the bay, and that was fine. Thereafter, we went home through Marigot (got Le Petit hotel brochures in Grand Case) to see if we made better timeā€”yes, except for rush hour.ā€

ā€œSun, at last! Weā€™re off to Nikkiā€™s CafĆ© for breakfast. The one kilometer walk to town starts on little Colla Road that passes in front of the cottage. Here, we keep a sharp eye out for cars ready to dodge them or clamber the rock wall until we reach the heartbreakingly beautiful abandoned church with its well-maintained cemetery. Following the sign, Foreshore Walk to the Pier, we saw the harbor glinting below at the foot of the steep, narrow cement walkway that surrounds a large sheep or cow pasture.

One cannot help but read the names and epitaphs on the gravestones. It sinks in how many people we know in America with those same names, and here are some of their ancestors. One headstone reads, ā€œIn loving memory of Eileen Austin, nee Cruise. A lady of no mean spirit and a true Cruise.ā€ā€
