After downsizing and moving from Orlando to Titusville, l'm finally adjusting to a much smaller home "studio" on my back porch. It's only a table on wheels but I can turn it around and watch tv while I'm working if I want to. This room faces west so I get to see sunsets, storms, golfers (I am at the first tee box on a small course) and nature. No complaints!

Finally! I made time for a new mosaic portrait (special 'cuz its my BF Gary) Material is stained glass "scrap", which I used rather than buy new glass. So, I had to work with the colors (values) I had at hand.

AN ARTIST'S IDEA MEETS THE HANDS OF 300 ARTISTS, SCULPTORS AND MORE THAN 1000 VOLUNTEERS.

The Mosaic of Andreina is a public art project, conceived by
the artist Andreina Giorgia Carpenito in 2009 and still ongoing. The artwork currently extends over a surface of 9700 sq. ft, inside and outside the church of the Holy Spirit of Indicatore, a few miles from the town Arezzo (Tuscany, Italy). When completed, the artwork will cover 32,000 sq. ft. Since 2012 the Cultural Association Ezekiel has been in charge of the coordination and support for the advancement of the mosaic.

Remembering Frida Kahlo on her birthday July 6, 1907–1954.

Frida Kahlo was considered one of Mexico's greatest artists and feminists. She began painting mostly self-portraits after she was severely injured in a bus accident. Kahlo later became politically active and married fellow artist Diego Rivera in 1929. She exhibited her paintings in Paris and Mexico before her death in 1954.

Her biography is an amazing story of pain, talent, perseverance and love. You can read more about her at https://www.fridakahlo.org/frida-kahlo-biography.jsp .

Shown below is one of her self portraits interpreted in pique-assiette by me. Her self portraits contain many forms of symbolism. You can read about this one that was dedicated to Dr. Eloesser at https://www.fridakahlo.org/self-portrait-dedicated-to-dr-eloesser.jsp .

It has been a crazy 2020, as you know. Having art in my life has been my saving grace during this time.

I took time off to review several written tutorials to offer on www.MosaicMadeEasy.com and also to make new mosaic art. I'm getting there!

Thanks for your patience and remain safe and enjoy your art and summer! Michele

I love Susan Smith's glass mosaics!

Hello everyone! I thought this week for sharing Sunday I would post something that I up-cycled. I would love to see what you have given new life to as well.
This was originally a bowling ball I found at the tip. As they're dark in colour, I used a white exterior tile adhesive and exterior quality black grout. As the holes are quite deep, I filled them just a little at a time with tile adhesive ( you can use cement if you wish) and let that dry first before then filling a little bit more and so on. When the holes were filled I placed a large nugget or tile over them.
These are great as a substrate as you can use tiles, glass, shapes and nuggets to produce your own imaginative patterns and designs and just go with the flow. They are so bright and colourful and can really cheer up a garden or yard.
Take care and stay safe, Sue x

As I sit hear trying to make my own masks I remembered my 'outfit' for my free Safety Video at https://www.youtube.com/c/MosaicMadeEasy . Who knew I would need it someday??

I used masks & gloves for mixing grout and thin-set (albeit late in my career) but alas, none left. What used to be funny is now scary. Safety is now so important in every aspect of our life, not just grouting.

So, be safe and continue to do what you love. Mosaic - and all art & music, remains the best medicine we have to go thru this time of isolation.

Regarding outdoor substrates/bases I found a product called FOAMULAR, made by Owens Corning, at Home Depot. It is a 2' x 2' square of moisture resistant insulation and 1" thick (perfect for my house numbers) and only $5.98. I called the company and they said it is a great option for us. (we agreed it should be coated which took me to Floracraft "Smooth Finish Foam Coating" which can be used outdoors and is carried by Walmart for $5.97. I will use stencils to cut out numbers and test a few adhesives and let you know!

Some great news for you!

I have lowered the current Video Courses on Mosaic Made Easy from $75 to $40!!! Because my recent move eliminated the space needed to do mosaic tutorial videos, I will also be offering more classes in print for a very low price.

The first one will be on Mosaic Portraiture Based on Tonal Values, which I first introduced at SAMA in 2007. Since then it has grown into the most comprehensive portraiture tutorial anywhere - I'll let you know when its done!

The photo shown is from that class and is a compilation of 20 students, each learning to identify the values in the original photo. If you are a mosaic teacher, this was the best class (and the most fun class) I have ever taught! I will license these tutorials, with specific teacher instructions, to qualified instructors (message me via Messenger for more info).

Why am I doing this? I will be 70 yrs. old this March (whaaat?) As the say "you can't take it with you" and my greatest joy the last 25 years has been teaching what I know and I want to pass it on. Thanks to all who have accompanied me on my mosaic adventures!

Magnificent ! Smalti slivers lend themselves to such beautiful gradations of color!

In a mosaic, what we all need in these delicate days: ginko biloba is indeed a symbol of peace, hope and vitality. Used in Art and Literature throughout the last 20 centuries, it’s considered the most ancient living tree. It even survived the World War II nuclear bombing on Hiroshima with calmness and balance, and is now planted all over the world symbolizing rebirth.

In response to the many comments I received about the mosaic numbers I have contacted skeew.biz in Orlando to see if they offer them in hardi backer - it would be a better option than wood for many areas, although mine have survived our rainy seasons and can be easily moved inside if needed. (Skeew also has a page) I'll let you all know!

I made these house numbers for my new home (1964). I had no real vision except for it to be bright and cheerful and to use up my plethora of mosaic supplies.

Another family saw them and commissioned the "4920" ones.
Materials include vintage S&P animals, Kismet tiles, stained glass scraps, resin flowers, buttons, ceramic leaves, glass beads and more!

The wood numbers were sealed with Thompson's water seal on back and sides (do not use on top as glue will not stick to it) then painted with exterior paint. The top was lightly sealed with Weldbond 5:1 and water then grouted. The grout was sealed as well. Glue was mainly GE Silicone Glue.

There is no limit to the materials we use. (Or the size of the piece!)

Completed... All natural stone including the Valdes Island sandstone buttresses flanking each side. The hearth is a slab of basalt sawn from a column and polished. The stones above collected over 50 years by our clients. An honouring of a lifetime exploring the outdoors together. Delivered and craned into place on Christmas Eve as an anniversary gift to his wife.

Metal + rust + creativity really turns me on!!

Indonesian artist Ono Gaf works primarily with metallic junk reclaimed from a trash heap to create his animalistic sculptures. His most recent piece is this giant turtle containing hundreds of individual metal components like car parts, tools, bike parts, instruments, springs, and tractor rotors. Yo

Wedding Mandala, made for a wedding gift. I used all things white, silver and gold including mirror, pearls, millefiori, vintage Czech rhinestones, Kismet gold petals, white triangles, and white mini rounds, rhinestone jewelry and an assortment of beads. The center is a locket with the couple's picture. This was so much fun!
Downsizing was a huge challenge for me. My new home had little storage space and no studio space. What to do with 40+ shoe boxes of mosaic supplies? Use them! I worked on this concrete bunny while I waited for the house to be built. I used jewelry, Kismet tiles, broken dishes, Wits End tiles and glass beads.
As most of you know, since June of 2019 I have been living with family and friends while my new home in Titusville, Florida was being built. I moved in a few months ago and love living on the Space Coast!!

Now that I am settled, I’ll be scheduling group classes and offer private classes. I no longer have a video studio but will be offering several written tutorials. If you want to follow the class announcements and enjoy mosaic art photos from around the world, please FOLLOW the Mosaic Made Easy page. Stay tuned!
