Help make an impact by sharing information to the study below!

Study Title: The LGBTQ+ Community in Zoos and Aquariums

Study Origin: Q***R Employee Resource Group at the Wildlife Conservation Society

What is the purpose of this study?

Diversity and inclusion based on sexual orientation is crucial to the larger conservation goals of zoos and aquariums because it expands the reach of the conservation messages that zoological facilities try to convey to the world. By recognizing and highlighting q***r staff and their experiences in the zoological field, it offers the chance for zoos and aquariums to expand the scope of their work by having LGBTQ+ inclusive programming, raising funds for their conservation initiatives through novel sources, and increasing the welfare of their LGBTQ+ staff.

While recognizing q***r staff in zoos and aquarium is important in terms of a diversity and inclusion standpoint, no research has been done to examine the extent that the LGBTQ+ community is included in the zoological field. This survey hopes to investigate if there is a higher percentage of employees who identify as q***r in zoos and aquariums, what qualities draw q***r people to this field, and if the zoological field is an inclusive place from the perspective of q***r employees. This research could have major implication on the diversity and inclusion initiatives of AZA and other zoological facilities across the country.

02/10/2023

We are continuing our Black History Month spotlights with Phebean Williams. She is the Program Assistant for the Aquatic Health Department at the New York Aquarium. She is also the Program Administrator for the Aquatic Veterinary Student Externship Program. She has been with WCS for 11 years.

When asked why is diversity in the zoo and aquarium field important? She writes:
“When there is diversity, there is always a chance of gaining new awareness and understanding of the world and the people around you. It helps build a stronger bond where people can express their ideas and learn from each other within the institution”.

When asked what is your favorite part about working for WCS?
She writes:
“My favorite part about working for WCS was the ability to learn and gain experience through volunteering. In 2012, I started out as a seasonal worker with WCS. I became interested in volunteering and wanted to learn more about how the animals were cared for and what it took to keep them in good health. That led me to volunteer with the Aquatic Health department, which I did for a couple of years before becoming a full-time employee. That experience gave me a great appreciation of the hard work and the people that are involved with the well-being of the animals. It is great to know that I am part of this team, and can contribute in a variety of ways to help make our Department run smoothly”.

To kick off our spotlights for Black History Month, meet James Williams. He is a Supervising Attendant for the
Operations & Maintenance department at the Queens Zoo. He has been with WCS for 11 years.

When asked why is diversity in the zoo and aquarium field important? He writes:

“It’s definitely important because we get to learn from one another. Perspectives matter, beliefs matter, and our backgrounds matter, this is what makes us unique. What better place to learn from folks different from you, and the bonus is you get to learn about the different animals you’re surrounded by”.

When asked what is your favorite part about working for WCS? He writes:

“It’s definitely the people. I’ve
had the privilege of meeting some good kindhearted people here, some of which I call family. We spend most of our time in our respective facilities. I feel it’s only right to embrace your peers, sometimes we are all the family someone has”.

AAZK Virtual Compassion Fatigue Panel Discussion:

Wednesday August 3, 2022
6:30 PM via Zoom

We hope you join New York City AAZK for a Zoom event on Wed August 3, 2022 at 6:30 PM to talk about a prevalent issue in the zoological field that sometimes gets unmentioned: Compassion Fatigue and Burnout.

Compassion Fatigue in zoos and aquariums can be loosely defined as, a "combination of physical, emotional and psychological depletion associated with caring for animals and their well-being in a captive environment" (AZA 2018). For many keepers, trainers, vet techs and other zoo and aquarium staff, this has been something exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic.

Join us to hear from a panel of therapists, former keepers, and mental health experts on how to identify compassion fatigue and burnout, how to practice self-care to ameliorate the problem, and coping mechanisms we can all use in this industry. Look for more info soon with the zoom link.

b. The LOI shall list AAZK Chapter Officers by title in the Chapter and their
membership status within the Association.
c. The LOI should also address the number of conferences the officers of the
Chapter and/or the potential Conference Committee have previously hosted
and/or attended.
d. The LOI should also contain all current and pertinent contact information for
the Chapter Officer signing the Letter.

2. A list of current AAZK Chapter members.

3. A current bank account statement from the financial institution detailing the funds on account and held by the AAZK Chapter.

4. A letter of support from the potential Host Institution(s), signed by the CEO or equivalent.

5. Letters of support from any other recognized organization within your community, pertinent to the hosting of a conference (Chamber of Commerce or similar entity).

6. An estimate of cost associated with lodging (per night) projected for the calendar year of the regional conference.

*All the information needed to submit an inquiry can be found in AAZK's Operation Manual AD 7.03-1.
Several AAZK chapters have successfully hosted regional conferences. If your AAZK Chapter has a passion for professional development start the process today!
