"The works in Divine Queerness are sprinkled throughout the second and third floors of the community center, interwoven into the space in a way that feels akin to a treasure hunt. The photographs are displayed against the backdrop of offices, bathrooms, and the echoing chatter of staff and visitors. The Center, founded in 1983 as a resource hub for LGBTQ+ community members, is already full of artworks and historical memorabilia — from Keith Haring’s “Once Upon A Time” (1989) site-specific bathroom mural to David LaChapelle’s larger-than-life Humankind (1989) collages to Gran Fury’s crimson “RIOT” painting from 1988. Mixed amongst them, the works selected for Divine Queerness appear to be in communication with these permanent displays, activating a unique viewing experience."

The exhibition features artists Amarise Carrera, Debmalya Ray Choudhuri, Benjamin Eichert, Lola Flash, Dauris Martinez, Gabriel Garcia Roman, and Giancarlo Montes Santangelo. Curated by Gabriel G. Torres.

Divine Queerness: Forms and Tools Methods of Healing at The Center is now on view in-person, and virtually until September 24, 2023.

En Foco is very excited to announce a special commission project with photographer and Educator Aaron R. Turner who is currently based in Arkansas.

Aaron was selected as a 2019 En Foco Photography Fellow and participated in our 2021 Dos Mundos Exhibition. Our forthcoming commission project with Aaron centers his photo archival research on renowned photographer Tony Gleaton. By using the EnFoco Study Center and digital archive as guides, Aaron was able to gain access to a special photographic series by Tony Gleaton. This commission project is being developed, produced, and curated through Aaron’s desire to uncover Tony Gleaton’s photo works in the Afro-Mexican community.

Today our artist profile celebrates Aaron’s powerful photographic projects and research both individually and collectively with En Foco. Please take a moment to learn more about Aaron Turner’s work and his current exhibit in collaboration with Penumbra Foundation titled “Black Alchemy: Resolve (attempt #1) on view until September 30, 2023, and his new book as well as his previous works via his website.

En Foco is embarking on a new initiative, commissioning three artists to create new work using the Nueva Luz Study Center as a catalyst to explore historical contexts, artists, and themes from a contemporary point of view. We seek to fund proposals that inspire and re-contextualize artworks, themes, and issues contained or referenced within the archives and propel the original compositions into exciting directions that inform audiences anew and add to our long-lasting legacy of excellence in the arts.

First published in 1985, Nueva Luz is produced twice annually and highlights the work of contemporary photographers with essays by fellow cultural writers. Nueva Luz is a valuable cultural, social, and political document—an evolution of voices from diverse backgrounds that are used by artists, gallerists, curators, academics, activists, and social historians. The Nueva Luz Study Center has been formed to make the digital archives more accessible and activates the material through programming.

We are open to projects that take varied forms and we encourage all artists including visual artists, choreographers, composers, poets, curators, activists, etc. who reside in New York State. The final project will be published in the fall issue of Nueva Luz, and will become part of the Nueva Luz Study Center and it’s digital archives. The Nueva Luz Commission Fund is En Foco’s new funding source for artists that adds to existing Fellowship and Media Arts Fund programs and previous New Works artists from 1996 to 2007.

05/05/2023

En Foco is thrilled to announce the opening of F[ull] Stop: 2023 Fellowship Exhibition, featuring the work of ten early-career photographers of color selected from the prestigious En Foco Photography Fellowship, now in its 8th year. The exhibition will showcase the exceptional work of Ángel Añazco, Tanya Bindra, Samantha Box, Ryan Frigillana, Pratya Jankong, Thalia Juárez, Ashley McLean, Eduardo L Rivera, Mateo Ruiz Gonzalez, and Ana Vallejo.

Curated by interdisciplinary visual artist Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz, the exhibition will be displayed from May 18 to June 30, 2023, at WallWorks NY, located at 15 Canal Place in The Bronx, New York.

An opening reception will take place on May 18, 2023, from 6 to 8 PM, where the new Nueva Luz issue will also be available for purchase. Viewing is available from Wednesday to Friday by appointment

Raimundi-Ortiz's curatorial statement emphasizes the uplifting nature of the photography on display, which captures the beauty and resilience of individuals from diverse communities across the United States. She states "What struck me immediately across the selections I viewed during my studio visits with each of the artists was a sense of lift—elevation—to be more precise. While many of the subjects are captured within hostile architecture and landscapes, the level of reverence for the sitters is palpable through the lens. These are real people living real lives, attempting a semblance of normalcy within the harsh lighting in a crab processing plant, having una cerveza fria (a cold beer) in a humble watering hole in a Southwestern community, or the familiarity of densely crowded neighborhoods. We know these places, spaces, and faces. Our individual lived experiences when applied to viewing this work pierces the veil and stretches us past the frame."

Congrats to all the fellows!

Filmmaker Christine Choy is best known for her Oscar-nominated, Peabody-winning documentary that she co-directed with Renee Tajima-Peña, “Who Killed Vincent Chin?” (1987).

Choy grew up in an eclectic household of women in the French Concession of Shanghai during the 1950s. Just before the Cultural Revolution, her family received permission from the government to leave China and join her father, who had a business in South Korea. At the age of fifteen, she was able to immigrate to the U.S. for study through a Korean Catholic school which had a sister school in New York City. Choy arrived at a time when the country was embroiled in protests for civil rights and demonstrations against the Vietnam War. She credits a film showing the human beings behind the war by Dutch filmmaker Joris Ivens for opening her eyes to the power of the medium. Though formally trained in architecture, Choy decided to make a shift and pursue a career in filmmaking. In 1972, Choy helped found Third World Newsreel, an alternative media arts organization supporting filmmakers who spotlighted voices and issues of communities of color often caricatured or ignored by mainstream media. Believing that a documentary filmmaker must take a position, “even if it might be jeopardizing your family, your fortune,” Choy possesses a fearlessness and activist spirit that clearly manifests in the more than 85 works she has directed, produced or photographed over the course of her long career. The stories her films have shed light on include a history of Chinese American organizing, from railroad to garment workers; the resettlement of refugees after the Vietnam War; the 1992 L.A. riots, as recounted from the perspective of three Korean women shopkeepers; and of course, the murder and subsequent fight for justice for Vincent Chin. A landmark in Asian American and documentary filmmaking, the film was newly restored and recently shown as part of MOCA Cinema: Spotlight on Women Filmmakers and the trove of materials that the filmmakers collected in the research and making of the film are preserved at MOCA.

I want to take a moment to acknowledge the institutional support that has been so important in making the "Schools for the Colored" project possible.

Based on my work in "Small Towns, Black Lives" the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowship in photography was the basis of the transformation into "Schools for the Colored." This was followed by a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts which allowed for more extensive research and travel throughout the region. A New Jersey State Council on the Arts fellowship supported the fabrication of the finished works into what has been an ongoing traveling exhibition of this project. Throughout this and other projects my academic home institution Stockton University Visual Arts Program (Stockton University School of Arts & Humanities), has been a steadfast supporter.

Some of the earliest institutions that supported the exhibition of the work in this project include the Bernstein Gallery at Princeton School of Public and International Affairs and Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art in Newark. There are too many others to mention but I remain grateful for every institutional and independent non-profit space that has supported this work through solo and group exhibitions.

Of course special thanks and gratitude to En Foco for supporting the work for many years through the fellowship program, including the works in the permanent collection, and publication.
