For 11 years I was a volunteer at the Huntington Free Library when it was the library for the Museum of the American Indian. The collection contained over 40,000 books dating back to the 1500's. I got to meet such Native performers as Matoaka Little Eagle and Kenneth Little Hawk. My deepest appreciation to the Head Librarian Mary Davis for bringing me on board and opening doors for me.
"Inside the Huntington Free Library & Reading Room, a fixture in Westchester Square since the 1890s, bags of carrots and boxes of almond milk have replaced printers and paperweights, transforming the privately endowed library from a functioning reading and research center into a bustling food-distribution hub and pantry.
Joined by the Loving the Bronx community group, the library has created partnerships with organizations that provide volunteers with fresh produce and healthy foods that they in turn distribute to the community. Volunteers work with major wholesale distributors to get food donated and delivered to the library."

"The Huntington Free Library & Reading Room, a community staple since before The Bronx, New York was even part of New York City, has decided to help feed neighbors, despite its doors being closed to its usual visitors and programming being severely altered due to COVID-19."
